One of the original Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, it was built to house the body of King Mausolus by his wife Artemisia. Destroyed by earthquakes and pillaging by the early Middle Ages, but two impressive statues survive, now in the British Museum.

Newel - The central supporting pillar of a spiral staircase. It can also refer to an upright post that supports the handrail of a stair railing and forms the lower, upper or an intermediate terminus of a stair railing usually at a landing.
