(I thought about putting this in Current News and Events, but maybe this is a better place.)

This thread can be a place to post announcements of things to watch for in the sky -- eclipses, meteor showers, Vulcan spaceships, etc. They should be timely notices, for the day or week.

TODAY: There's a spectacular crescent Moon with a brilliant Venus in the sunset sky right this moment (Eastern US time). Go outside and take a look to the southeast at sunset, wherever you are. And maybe take a picture and post it here!

Spectacular crescent moon and Venus setting again right now in the eastern US -- if you're farther west you've still got an hour or three to go look.

Perhaps if they were rising, but in this case they are setting.

Beautiful sliver of a crescent moon just becoming visible in the darkening western sky.

The Skyview app is also pretty cool. I know it's on Android, but I would bet it's on iPhone also!

And a spectacular combination of the crescent moon and Venus this evening at sunset -- don't miss it!

I can't believe how bright Venus continues to be -- I wonder if the Venusians are up to something... 8O

NASA has the details:

https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/

On Monday, August 21, 2017, all of North America will be treated to an eclipse of the sun. Anyone within the path of totality can see one of nature’s most awe inspiring sights - a total solar eclipse. This path, where the moon will completely cover the sun and the sun's tenuous atmosphere - the corona - can be seen, will stretch from Salem, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina. Observers outside this path will still see a partial solar eclipse where the moon covers part of the sun's disk. NASA created this website to provide a guide to this amazing event. Here you will find activities, events, broadcasts, and resources from NASA and our partners across the nation.

And roads across the country have been jammed with eclipse watchers all weekend:

This shows why people in the US are so caught up in this eclipse -- it crosses right across the country from one end to the other:

Going out to look myself in a few minutes! :D
