do you find it strange if someone refers to a residential bathroom as a "restroom"? someone who was visiting me once asked me if they could use my restroom. i found that strange sounding.

I find the term restroom very strange. I know what it means, but it makes me think it should refer to the bedroom or even living room. It has nothing to do with rest.
