How do you act towards a flat mate you don't know?

Hi. I have been wondering about this for a while, but how do you act towards your flat mate? Do you say hi everyday? Or is that awkward when you usually don't talk to each other? Do you smile to your flat mate?

Hi! Millions of people all over the world have flat mates, and I guess that in most cases these people become good friends. I can't imagine living in one flat with someone without talking to him/her. And to say "hello" is at least manifestation of polite behavior :) Do you have a flat mate or you're going to have?
