My grandmother needs an open heart surgery. She'll be going to the hospital in a few days. She has a leaky heart valve, which is apparently very common and easy to fix, but it's still an open heart surgery and I know those are super risky and take forever to recover from. Just thinking about what happens during it makes my skin crawl. I'm really worried about her but I can't do anything about it. I'm going to help her when she gets out of the hospital, but until then I won't know for sure whether the surgery went okay or if there were any complications. My grandfather died two years ago of a heart attack so any heart-related issue gives me a lot of anxiety (he was only 60something and it was really sudden). What can I do to stop myself from panicking (besides prayer)? Has anyone else been in a similar situation?

Also, if you are religious, can you please pray for her?

Hi rats_and_cats,

I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother.
Please know that she is in my prayers, for her good health and healing, and a successful surgery.

May God bless you, your grandmother, and all your family
now and in the New Year.

I pray for your mother's surgery to go well and for her to recover quickly

I pray for you that you can be less anxious and that you will enjoy your time helping your grandmother - good for you for wanting to help.

Thank you both for your prayers. Apparently, the surgery was postponed because of an emergency root canal. They have to wait to make sure there are no complications from that. It's frustrating for everyone. Grandma's been planning a big overseas trip for a while and she was really excited about it, and now she'll have to start planning again from scratch. She even already put in some deposits, but she had to cancel the trip because it would conflict with her recovery period.

I just got the news today that her surgery is tomorrow. I'm glad the doctors didn't take their freaking time again. So now I should probably find something to do so my family doesn't have another heart problem to worry about. :P

I'm so glad surgeries are becoming less invasive, I just wish that would happen slightly faster. I saw a surgery robot at the science center the other day.

What am I saying right now? I should go do something else.

Just wanted to give everyone an update and I said about 3X more than necessary.

The surgery got delayed by two hours for some reason, so I still have to wait to hear any news. But no news is good news right now. She's in surgery right now and by my estimate should be about halfway through if all is going well.

She's out of surgery and everything went well. She's doing fine. I'm sure she's not out of the woods yet, but so far things are good.

She's out of ICU and in a normal hospital room. She's going home tomorrow so I'll meet her there. Packing up now. Thanks everyone for your prayers!
