IT Roles

I work for Hewlett Packard Enterprise as a software tester. I want to have a career in IT. Maybe in software development, maybe in another field of IT.

My question is, what other roles are there in IT? Also what are the different roles within software development? I was trying to come up with a career plan when I realised I'm very naive. I don't even know what the different IT roles are. So I can't yet make an informed decision about which one I want to pursue.

So my questions are

1. What roles exist within software development?
2. What other roles exist in IT?

As a tester, try to get into test automation or test engineering. Write scripts to make testing faster and more efficient. Get recognized as coder and work your way up, Develop strong SQL skills as these are relatively rare even in IT as most people can't think in sets very well.
