One thing that I really do not understand is chit chat and small talk. I've been told by family, friends, and colleagues, that it is difficult to develop rapport with me. I'm worried about this based on the fact that I plan to teach secondary school science next fall.

Aside from my spouse, neither of us have many friends or family in the area. I would like to practice my small talk more often. At this point, I've resorted to talking with the cashier at the bank and attendants at the grocery store. Does anyone have any suggestions on good venues to develop rapport with other people? I am also looking for any helpful books.

Thanks in advance!
