It's an action RPG. That means you've just gotta grind and hope for good weapons to drop. Also, I've heard that in the very first game, there's a glitch with the shotguns that makes them really overpowered, so try using those.

Big fan of these games; the feeling of isolation, great soundtrack, addicting gameplay of finding new weapons, fun humour.. Playing through first game again as the warrior, soloing through the story and maybe trying to get high level enough to solo Crawmerax one day 
And nice to see another person from Finland
