A long time ago. Now they're just powerless kooks with goofy titles and silly outfits, who get way more attention than they deserve.
Oh, their membership has killed people very recently. The difference between now and then is, at one time, the Klan was a politically powerful terrorist organization that had enough push and pull to provide cover for their members, even in cases of murder. Today, they commit a murder, they get sent up the river.

The Ku Klux Klan was founded in the aftermath of the Civil War and functioned as the paramilitary wing of the Democratic Party, using terrorism to undermine the Republican-led reconstruction of the South and to violently suppress Black (Republican) voting.

Yes, but that changed when conservative white southern Democrats were wooed to the Republican party, first by Nixon, then by Reagan, when the 20th century Democrats became the party of civil rights and liberalism. Rather than political parties being emphasized here, it's more a matter of political ideology - right versus left. Seriously, how many liberal Klansmen do you ever see?

One interesting aspect about the KKK is that despite their involvement in lynchings and murder they once had membership of 8 million Americans in the early 1920s made up of mainstream, middle-class white Americans who donned the white robes of the Klan too. Doctors, lawyers and ministers became loyal supporters of the KKK.
With such a huge support were able to march onto Washington in 1928 without any obstruction in a show of strength. One writer called the organisation the "invisible empire" and it was thought that actual support for the KKK was much more widespread (akin to German public support for the Nazis) across America.
The legacy of the KKK is therefore much greater than the average American dares to admit...

Oh, my..... Ezra, I don't think I've ever heard you say anything that struck me, as so un-educated and matter-of-factly. I have a feeling that the KKK is VERY powerful, in this country----just because they're not killing PUBLICLY, like they used to, doesn't mean, IMO, that they're not killing, AT ALL. Maybe one way to think of it, is.....
Have you ever heard / seen a news item regarding, say, a mob boss, or Mexican drug cartel, that had been killing / ordering hits for years, and they've just been caught? (I think you have----cuz, I imagine you've heard of El Chapo.) Well, one might have been hearing about these unsolved crimes, the whole time, but no one ever heard who was doing it.
IMO, the KKK may be the oldest / most active gang, in U.S. history----maybe, ONLY rivaled by the NY mobs, The Black Panthers, and the Mexican cartels; who, IMO, are ALL still "in business", to-this-day----AND, I'm thinking ALL of them are involved in manipulating politics ('cept, maybe, the Mexican cartels, who might only be sticking their noses in MEXICAN politics [that's at least ONE reason why, IMO, so many flee the Latin countries: because of corrupt governments----or, at least, that seems to be a common thread in what I've read]).

Maybe I glossed it over more than I meant to. I associate them with whatever other organized crime gang thugs who are in existence. It's just that I have a lowly opinion of them.

I had envisioned one of these lying dead by the creek.
Lol when the clip was on the news, all I heard was something about a dead wizard found by a creek,I wasn't paying very good attention.I had to go in and rewind it becuse that's the same visual I got.Except my wizard had a purple robe with gold stars and was laying face down in the dirt.
So I titled it that way for a laugh,I figured we'd all get a similar visual.

The KKK are similar to skin heads and Bikie gangs where members do have to prove their "crudentials" as white nationalists
The reason I alluded earlier to the KKK as a secretive "invisible empire" is because they operate in secrecy. The reason former members like David Duke and (now) the late Frank Ancona were booted out is because they are too much in the public eye.
Their actual membership is much higher than current estimates and they resort to threaten their (usually) African American, Jewish or Mexican victims if they go public with being victims of assault/vandalism. Currently illegal mexicans are a popular target for new inductees as the illegals can't go to the police.
In terms of actual American politics in 2017, the Ku Klux Klan is about as influential as the Church of Satan (which has more members). They'd be even closer to extinction than they already are if the left-wing grifters and con artists of the Southern Poverty Law Center, who have made themselves rich by running shake-down scams and promoting hysteria, weren't so desperate to keep the Klan alive so their money flow can continue.

That's what I meant when I referred to them as being powerless.
I agree that a lot of things like this, racism and the like are ironically perpetuated by some of those who are against it.
Spoken by a man who doesn't have a Klavern in the county next to him.
Harrison is the largest town near me,so I get to see the lovely billboards and signs they put up when I occasionally shop there.FedEx and some of the larger companies have tried to intice workers of color to relocate to the area but they don't stay very long.Gee,I wonder why?The Klan is alive and well in America.
