In almost every "free" online virtual world game, you always have to buy membership or stuff with real money in order to actually enjoy the game. Are there any free online games which doesn't do that?

I'm curious, what sorts of "virtual world" games are you talking about?

Well, these games need to make money somehow...

Runescape doesn't require more money than the monthly membership, although it does have an optional microcredit store (note: optional, and it mostly offers cosmetical items).

If you want another one, perhaps the elder scrolls: online; it has a slightly steep entry cost (to buy the game), but it is completely free afterwards.

I've been playing Lord of the Rings Online for over a year and most of the time I've used the free to play mode. Evey once in a while I'll buy a month's worth of VIP accaccount for $14.99 USD for the perks like accelerated leveling. But mostly I've thoroughly enjoyed it F2P.

Guild wars 2. Buy the game, no sub. You can get it for really cheap now and even play a free account.
