SO Starmarie is a Fantasy Idol group, they may look like Harajuku Lolitas from the outside but they are perhaps the best dancer/singers I have seen. I have been a proud fan for about 4 years now. I collect their merchandise and their Handshake events are more like old friends meeting rather than something business-entertainment ish

I listen to Soul'D out they're a Japanese hip-hop group that mixes hip-hop, R&B and JPOP with some world. I got into them through Diggy Mo when looking for more of his songs and finding out he is apart of it. I like his Soul'D out work waaaay more than his solo stuff. I had no idea that two of their songs were referenced in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (one of my favorite series) and used in a cancelled movie of theirs.





Yamajet is one of my most favorite electronic music artist. I heard his music in a trailer for a concept indie game and went to check out his soundcloud. Found out he made some songs for the game Cytus and several other rhythm games. If I were to make video game soundtracks I'd emulate his style it just sounds so cool. Also because of him I've gotten into all these small Japanese record labels that have several different electronic music artist!





Yuzu is a Japanese folk and pop rock duo. I discovered them through Hunter X Hunter (one of my favorite series)





I discovred TЁЯRA through Dance Dance Revolution, infact this group soley makes music for that and other rhythm games.





I also discovered BeForU through Dance Dance Revolution, the producer for TЁЯRA also produced for BeForU.



Ikimono Gakari is an old favorite. I got into them through Naruto and Bleach. I use to play Blue Bird all the time after hearing it in Naruto for the first time.





Dang your post got me in the mood to expand my library of Japanese artist because now I'm craving some Japanese music.

SnailHail, do you know the song on which Diggy Mo collaborated with m-flo and singer Emyli? It's one of the songs that introduced me to him (the other being 'Oasis', which he did together with Bennie K)



I actually really like m-flo's 'm-flo loves' trilogy of albums (Astromantic, Beat Space Nine, and Cosmicolor) on which they had guest appearances from many J-Urban/J-Pop artists, and even some names from the rock and electronic scenes. It's how I was introduced to many of my favourite J-Pop singers.

When it comes to female voices in J-Pop, I tend to gravitate toward voices that don't go with the more standard 'nasal' style of singing which you can hear from singers like Namie Amuro, Kumi Koda, or Miliyah Kato (though I do like some of their songs).

I like Emi Hinouchi, even if she's a bit of an airhead IRL, and she sometimes goes overboard with her ad libs in live performances. I ordered her first two albums online years ago, and they remain most cherished in my music collection:



I also really like Bonnie Pink's songs. They are always well-composed and well-written. Many of them have a positive upbeat feel, but every once in a while there's something a little bit more melancholy in there.



One of my all-time favourite anime ending themes has to be 'Magia' by Kalafina. It's from the series Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica:

SnailHail, thanks for recommending Uura Saeka and Home Made Kazoku. Definitely got me interested in checking more of their stuff. Also, I'll check out Kekkaishi. Had never heard of this series before, and I'd been looking for something new to read or watch and couldn't make up my mind.

I've definitely heard of Heartsdales before. Like you, they're hit and miss for me, but I quite like 'Body Rock' and most especially 'Should Have Tried' which they do together with singer Double. (The sad story of Double is that it used to be an R&B duo of two sisters, but, the eldest sister died of a blood disease in 1999, and the remaining sister continued making music under the name Double).



A more up-tempo remix of this song exists, titled 'Should Have What?' But I prefer the above version.

I think M-Flo was at their best when they were a trio (with singer Lisa who left the group after the second album). For me, it's more about DJ Taku's beats than about Verbal, who's average as a rapper. An example would be his 2-step remix of Utada Hikaru's 'Distance':



Are you also into Japanese rock bands, whether visual kei or alternative/progressive or heavier metal bands?
I also wonder whether Japan has any prominent triphop acts. Not sure that Cibo Matto counts. But what the hey:

I've been trying to get into JPop more lately! I've listened to a lot of Japanese music, primarily through anime, but I'd like to become more familiar with the genre. I know AKB48, Kyary, and a smattering of others.

Are there any major groups I should be aware of? I try to avoid the too-generic sounding, corporate idol groups, but I'm not judgemental if the music's good. ^^
