I don't think sci fi movie animators have ever been able to come up with anything better than actual fungi, which could pass for alien creatures in most any movie.

Earthstars are also one of my favorites, although they're not especially dramatic.

Big fleas have little fleas
Upon their backs to bite 'em,
And little fleas have lesser fleas,
And so, ad infinitum.

Amanita phalloides

Not much to look at in photos, but apparently they look really tasty in person. Ironically, people say they are very tasty, and then they get extremely sick with severe liver damage and other unpleasantness. 14 people got sickened in the Bay Area last December. 3 will need liver transplants. The article I read earlier today suggested that this one mushroom may account for 80% of people poisoned by misidentified mushrooms worldwide.

Hot and humid for the last couple of days, so this afternoon ... the first yellow slime mold of the season appeared on a local garden bed. :D

I don't think there's a brighter yellow in nature.
