When I was a kid, I used to think that when someone was "fired" from work, it involved actual fire. I would be in tears, begging my father to not get fired every time he left for work until they explained to me that "fired" simply meant loosing your job.

I also used to think that ALL poodles were female and ALL bald eagles were male.

I used to think that it is a part of social interaction to pretend that one is stupid. I did not realise that other children at school actually could not understand the things we were being taught, so I thought that all of them were pretending to be stupid all the time. So I pretended to be stupid too. I would say that I didn't know the answer to questions I did know, and avoid showing insight or precocious intellectual ability when talking to others.

I did this until I was about 9 years old, at which point I somehow realised that people did not routinely pretend to be stupid.

I used to think people were literal all the time.

Hmm, I guess the most important one I used to believe was that you could sit on your arse all day and good things came to you eventually.

Then I had a harsh dose of reality and learned that if you want things and change you have to put the hard work, sweat and tears in to get to where you need to be in life to be comfortable. And if you don't have any skills to offer to people you'll be on your arse forever.

I used to think that the day you turned 13 and became a teenager. Your voice would change instantly on the day you turned that age. But didn't know that it didn't till I turned 12 and my voice started changing. And that the Disney Vault was an actual vault that held old Disney movies. But then only learned like a couple of years that it was just an advertising term.

I thought dwarfs were just the stuff of fairy tales, because I had never seen one and only knew them from Snow White. Imagine my surprise when at the age of 6 I saw one at my mom's work place! I actually jumped up and ran around the corner in my excitement and shouted: "Look, a dwarf!"
I didn't think they existed so I was as excited as if it had been a dragon.

When I was 6 I thought when two people/families move, that they traded places with each other. Otherwise people would have to be moving all the time and that would make the country so chaotic.

In elementary school there was a boy in my class that was really bad at reading aloud in class. Every time he read aloud and stuttered his way poorly through it, I was honestly confused as to why the teacher let him read like that instead of just reading it as it should be read. Up to the age of 9 or so I didn't realize he couldn't do it better. When I got home, one of the things I would play was school with my plushies, and I would have them read as some of the pupils in my class did, but I would admonish the plushy when it was 'bad' and didn't read properly.

Likewise I knew that maths was really hard for me, but i didn't understand until about 4th grade or so that not everyone had my problems with it.

Up until high school I believed that kids with disabilities were given special rules and not all rules applied to them so I didn't think all rules applied to me and I also wanted special rules too like keeping the house clean and following my rules and have everything go my way because I have AS and it's a form of autism and I was seeing other autistic kids got their way so I wanted that privilege so I wouldn't have anxiety. Then I couldn't understand why even have a diagnoses if you can't use it and why even give me an IEP if it's so wrong to use it. Why even modify my school work, why even give me an aide? Why even have a disability if all rules were going to apply to you and you were still expected to be normal?

I thought bullying was part of being normal so I picked on other kids to be normal.

I thought only second graders could be mean to other kids for talking funny and for how they talk

I thought rules were assigned to different age groups and they simply change the rules as you get older without you even knowing

I thought disorders were only created for list of behaviors people have because they didn't like those behaviors and personalities and people could simply choose to not be that way by trying. I thought this into my twenties.

I thought a step mom or step father or step siblings were family members who were mean

I thought getting divorced parents meant having two houses and two families and double siblings so I wanted my parents to have a divorce because I thought all divorces were like Karen Brewer's.

I thought I could get myself to do the splits if I kept on practicing and stretching out the bones in my legs to make myself do a split. Even my mom gave me that thought too. Stupid parents, I wish they wouldn't lie to their kids.

I thought leaving clothes in the dryer for too long past the buzzer would make them shrink into size of Barbie clothes. Thanks again Mom so I got anxiety in class when the teachers wouldn't get my sock out of the dryer when it buzzed. I thought I was only going to be wearing one pair that day and go sockless in my shoe.

Up until I was 15 I thought penises were called pee pees and penis was just a dirty word. Thanks Mom again :roll:So the reason why I refuse to call my son's penis a pee pee and I just call it a penis. My school counselor sure had a great laugh about it and said to me "You still call it that?" and I said "That is what they are" and he told me "no it's called a penis so you're still using baby talk for it."I told him my mom called it that and he goes "Oh she uses baby talk." That was how I then knew the actual name for it. And I had used that baby word in health class. Parents please use real words. I even thought pacifiers were called binkies into my teens so there I was still using baby talk for things. So please use real words to avoid any humiliation for your kids. I had to tell everyone that is what my mom always called them so they would know why I was using baby words, not that I was stupid and being childish.

I thought night time meant bed time so whenever my mom started to send us to bed when it was still daylight, I thought she was crazy and I didn't believe her when she said the sun was staying up too long. So when I heard how Alaska got long day time in the summer, I envied the kids up there because they had a long day and didn't need to go to bed but felt sorry for them in the Winter because I thought they would had to be in bed when they got home from school because it was dark time so it would be dinner and then bed because it's night time.

Also I thought "eight thirty" was my mom's new word for bed time so she called bedtime that instead of just saying it was bed time.

I'll pretend to be me at six years old.

I used to think only girls grew in the womb, and wasn't sure where boys come from until I had to ask (I was only about 5).

I once lost a ping pong ball by letting it roll into a storm drain by my home. I thought that one day Jerry Mouse would knock on my door and offer to retrieve it for me.

I had imagined that day over and over. He would be escorted by two men in black suits and sunglasses. He would saunter in like a boss of everything. When he got the ball, he would come out of the drain pipe, and offer me the ball on a silver platter. I would shake his hand, and we'd part ways.

He never came.

Our neighbors had a piece of old driftwood in their garden. I thought it looked rather like a duck, and so I believed it was a duck. I believed that the duck was always watching me and that it grew longer anytime I went past it. I believed it was friendly enough, unlike the bird that lived under my bed...

Up until a couple of months ago I thought that Britain did not include Scotland or Ireland, and that England was the whole country; Scotland, Ireland and Britain. Then I learnt from my boyfriend that it was the other way around; Britain is the whole country and England is the one that excludes Scotland and Ireland.

I was surprised when I learnt that, because England sounds bigger than Britain.
Funny, the things you learn about the country you have lived in your whole life.

When I was little, I was scared of sitting on the toilet because I believed that the flush could swallow me.
And I was terrified of going to MacDonald's because I believed that Ronald McDonald lived there and I've always found clowns scary.

I used to believe that you could watch a chicken get beheaded at Kentucky Fried Chicken, but kids were not allowed watch because of the bloody content.
