Would you rather hear fingernails scratching a chalkboard or a fire alarm going off?

Fingernails scratching chalkboard.

I'm fine with it if I can detatch myself from the action, ie not imagining it's myself doing the scratching. Plus, if I look away, it almost sounds like a car braking.

But the fire alarm ... there's no escape.

Fire alarm. My ears are more sensitive to the tone/pitch of nails on a chalkboard.

Fire alarms usually go off for a good reason - because there is a fire. Unless it's just a fire drill. Nails on a blackboard have no real purpose other than to make your skin crawl and torture you, so I hate that more. But it's not as bad as squeaky chalk. And cracking knuckles. And people coughing a lot, even if they can't help it. :(
