I have 3 adult children, two of them on/near the spectrum (Asperger's, BAP). I didn't have any viral illness in the 9 months before they were born. How do the researchers explain that away, in terms of their theory?

If I had ten cents for every one of these so-called "major breakthroughs" my bank balance would be looking quite rosy now.

The strange thing is, though - the child (as he was then, many years ago) in their photo is related to me. He was about 9 then - much older now. (He was born and has always lived in the UK, English mother married NZ father).

These breathless, hyped up articles convince and impress readers because of what's not reported in them: there was no clear information on control group factors

The reporters receive "major findings" however flawed they are, and (without the slightest nod to scientific principles) and then report them as almost miraculous breakthroughs in the manner of "You Read it First Here!! ! The Cure for Autism!! !! They want to sell newspapers. They couldn't care less about methodological rigour and other factors which cause scientific experiments to produce invalid findings, and the reporters typically show no ability to perform any kind of critical analysis, not even at the most basic level.

In fact, I have never read any curebie article in any of these sensational newspaper reports that ever did show that.

The claims in this study are far more reliable:

Autism has many different genetic causes so there won't be a single cure.
But science is moving in the direction of possibly finding cures.
