Could Space Jam 2 actually work if it's made?

For a while it's been said that Warners Bros is making a sequel to Space Jam. There hasn't been a release date yet, nor do we know if this movie will actually be made but all we know so far is that Lebron James may star in the movie instead of Michael Jordan and while I don't know if it's official or not, Justin Lin the director of Star Trek Beyond might direct. I have to admit I'm a little intrigued.

Back in the day I use to love Space Jam. I watched it a lot but now that I'm older I realise that the movie isn't as good as it use to be. It's kinda more of an advertisement than a movie. The film's plot is more of a focus on commercialism and product placement. Hell there's an entire line where the overweight guy from Jurassic Park mouths of a bunch of product placement in one sentence. The jokes and catchphrases are kind of a product of the times as well, but let's not forget the sexualised token girl character Lola Bunny. She's just a bland character with no personality with a sex appeal. With all this in it why would we want a sequel especially considering it came out two decades and half a year ago.

Well some things interest me. If Justin Lin is going to direct they it may have a slight chance as he's proved that he can direct a decent movie like Star Trek Beyond. Also while the original movie was a sellout there is actually another animated Warners Bros movie that you could say kinda had the potential to be a sellout and that's The Lego Movie. When you think about it that film was kind of a big advertisement with all the characters and sets being Lego. There's even a scene where one of the characters is naming all the Lego dimensions or places or worlds or whatever they call them and they're suppose to be really actually Lego sets you can buy. In a way that scene could be considered a sellout moment. But the movie doesn't feel like a sellout. It's a well put together movie with memorable and likable characters, a decent plot and a strong moral at the end. It's most likely that Space Jam 2 will have product placements like the last one but if they do it right like The Lego Movie did then maybe it could work.

I don't know about Lebron James as I've never seen him in film before. There's also kind of the repetitive plot problem that most sequels have. I assume the plot of this film will be like the last one. Looney Tunes and Basketball player team up to play Basketball against evil aliens. If they are gonna tell the same story then tell it in a way that hasn't been done before or just improve on it.

For me the most interesting thing about what may happen in this movie is Lola. Some of you may remember the short lived Looney Tunes tv series The Looney Tunes Show. In it Lola was voiced by Kristen Wig and she's portrayed as a crazy absent minded often unfocused goofball and she's hilarious. Now this hasn't been talked about and probably not even considered but maybe the filmmakers could consider adding Wig as Lola into the film.

There's a lot more I could say but I'm zoned out. It's possible this may work or not. We could get another sellout product that's not even trying but if Warners Bros put they're mind to it they could turn out a decent product. Some of the stuff I mentioned is worth looking into.

...I've seen the argument made that Bugs Bunny and the othef Looney Toons characters are passe to today's youner people.
Do you think that's true - And. for a Space Jam film, what would the age of the aimed-for audience be?
Also, do you think Warners would feel compelled to make the animation in a SP2 co.purter/CGI, not handmade/cel?

I believe I can fly!
I got shot by the FBI!
I think about it every night and day!
Spread my legs and fly away!
I believe I can soar!
I got run over by a 4 by 4!
I got eaten by a dinosaur!
I got [something] by an open door!

Ah, elementary school days. Loved them sometimes, hated them most of the time.

LeBron James played himself in Trainwreck and he did well. I really don't see Space Jam 2 working, though. It would probably end up more like a remake.

I'm still trying to grasp why this is even being made in the first place.
