i suppose hardwood floors are easier to clean. better for kitchens or bathrooms where some splashes are expected. like tile.

carpet is much more comfortable, in several senses of the word IMO. more home-y than hardwood floors in living rooms and bedrooms. depending on the thickness it might be safer for young kids?

i remeber my auntie's house having carpet all over the living rooms and bedrooms when i used to go there as a kid.

then they got rid of most of it and put in a dark mahogany in its stead.

it's like it wasn't even the same place anymore. :|

Hardwood is better if you have allergies because it can be cleaned better. We have carpet everywhere but the kitchen, bathroom & the stairs & we wish we had hardwood. We have allergies, had cats which of coarse got cat litter on the floor & we had a chinchilla but now have a guinea pig & they both eat hay. Sweeping up the hay after I clean the cage every week is a real pain cuz it doesn't sweep well on carpet & the vacuum won't pick up bigger pieces. I plan to clean the cage & vacuum tomorrow afterwards cuz it's really messy in front of the cage cuz I haven't vacuumed in a while.

Carpets for me, every time. Wooden floors are hard (obviously) and soulless. I've also heard that it can be hellish to live beneath a flat which has a wooden floor, especially if the occupant of that flat is (like me) a 'pacer'.

Carpets. I cried once because my dad ripped out my carpet (he didn't warn me about the change and I was very attached to it).

Hardwood floors are easier to clean but you will also get more airborne dust because it is stirred up whenever you move, basically, so you will have to vacuum rather than sweep, or use a microfibre broom and mop, and you will have to clean more often than if you have carpet.

Carpets require less day to day cleaning but they become dirtier in the long run and trap dust, which works its way down to floor level and becomes impossible to remove. Also can become stained and worn. If you have cats, fur will stick to it like glue.

I had carpet originally but had it removed.
I do prefer hardwood floors but they require more frequent attention, as I said above.

Better is very subjective. It depends on what you like, what you personally find easier to clean, and if you have allergies.

Personally I'm a carpet person.

If you have allergies, carpet clings to things that can exacerbate them, so hardwood floors are better for you in that regard.

I personally hate, loathe and detest hardwood floors for anything but looking attractive in a photograph in one of those home styling magazines.

They look beautiful in a beautiful home and when immaculately clean.

But about cleaning -- hardwood floors are "unforgiving" in terms of dirt showing.

They show up every bit of dustbunny, dirt or grit that happens to float onto them. You have to be cleaning them daily.

Carpets show dirt too but not right away and not obviously. Hard floors, you can see every piece of crap on them the moment it's there, and you have to get out the Swiffer.

I prefer carpet for every room except the bathroom and kitchen.

Carpet is one-step cleaning. You vacuum, and you're done.

With hardwood, you have to either vacuum or sweep and then you may also have to spot clean or damp-mop, particularly in a kitchen that gets stuff dropped and dripped.

I have cleaned all manner of houses for over twenty years. I've cleaned carpeted homes, and homes with tiled floors, and homes with all-hardwood. I hated every one of the ALL-hardwood or all tiled homes because it's nearly always a two-step-process, when with carpet it's one process.

Carpet to me is also more homey and comfortable. It even looks nicer to me. It also cuts down on echo in the room.

A room with hard floors echoes and is worse for misophonia like I have. A carpeted room muffles sound and is much more sonically, aurally comfortable.

Q: Which one is better? Hardwood Floors or Carpets?
A: Which is better? A Ferrari or a semi?

Answers will be different to radically different depending on definition of 'better'.

Hardwood with a nice Rug is a compromise.

Hardwood with a nice rug -- again, looks really nice, but for cleaning purposes I personally find that even more of a pain in the butt. Was my least favorite home to have to have on my schedule for cleaning. Hardwood floors, goddamn rugs everywhere making it a complicated clean.

Seriously. I have to vacuum the rug. Then if it's massively room sized, I have to roll the rug up and vacuum under one half. Then roll the other half and vacuum under that half. Then I have to vacuum the rest of the hardwood floor. Then I have to damp mop the floor.

If it's a smaller rug I have to vacuum the rug, then roll up or lift up the whole thing and put it somewhere. Then vacuum the floor, then damp mop the floor, then wait for the floor to be completely dry before heaving the rug back into place. . . .

Carpet? One vacuum. Done.

Hardwood floors are easier to clean (especially if you can't stand the sound of a vacuum cleaner, like me), but they tend to get too cold for my feet, and I hate wearing shoes or slippers around the house. So I guess both have their positives and negatives for me.

tend to agree. my relative's houses all lost a certain bit of charm when they ripped out their carpet and put in hardwood.

for many massive, sprawling indoor complexes, carpet cannot be substituted. the echo muffling effects and the complex, disorienting patterns on their surface are exclusive to carpet, and can you imagine a huge vegas casino with HARDWOOD FLOORS instead of carpet?

disturbing!

there's more to cleaning carpet than the vacuum cleaner, though, often some deeper cleaning is needed once in a while. the kind that is best done in summer because it leaves the whole floor damp, and hoping the sun will accelerate the drying. we used to rent the "rug doctor".

My house is all hardwood floor except the bathroom which is linoleum. It works out better for me since I have three indoor dogs, they track in lots of mud when it's wet outside.I have a few area rugs for color.Wood floors are chilly in the winter.A area rug is nice to rest your feet on then.

I can't stand carpets. They collect dust, and have to be deep-cleaned every so often.
