I live in Reading in the UK. I am 48 years old, married with a son and work as an engineer. I discovered my Aspergers two years ago. I would really like to make some Aspie friends. Can anyone please help or offer some advice?

I don't know about RL friends but you can PM me if you're open to internet friends. I'm around your age, have two sons, and am also an engineer. It might be interesting to compare notes.

Aspie friends are going to give you the same problems had you been friends with neurotypicals.

aspie friends sometimes give different problems than nt friends.

aspie friends sometimes give the same problems as nt friends.

on the positive side, aspie friends are more likely to understand your quirks. eccentricities. like how you might not feel like socializing. like how you sometimes blurt out weird things. anxiety. clinical depression.

on the negative side, aspie friends might misinterpret your nonverbal communication more often than nts.

having said that, what kind of engineer are you?

some articles claim that a disproportionate number of softwrae engineers act like they are AS.

why can't you just be friends with your coworkers?

AS used to be called "engineer's disease".

You can PM me too if you want. :D I want Aspie friends too, because as a group Aspies who go on this kind of board have social anxiety in RL so they know better than to make others anxious. The first two lines by shortfatbalduglyman were nice btw, don't know about the engineer thing...

I'm nearly 40, and have an interest in engineering.
Would be happy to chat. I live in New Zealand, one day I hope to move to the UK.

See if there's an aspergers social group near you, I sometimes go to one. By coincidence the one I go to is only 5 minutes down the road from me, its better to meet a group if possible if it's just one or 2 people you may find you dont get on with them

Mister Spock

When I went to an autism group, we all sat around a large table and took turns talking

It was just talking

Did not feel particularly comfortable or fascinated in anyone there

Having said that not all autism groups are the same at all times

And maybe you are better at talking than me

Why not just find some introverted NTs?

I'm keen if you just want to chat online, as I live on the other side of the planet.
Presently live in New Zealand, but in future have plans to move to UK.
