For every WP forum there's a list of threads, and to the left of each thread title (except for the 'stickies') there's a circle containing a quadrilateral figure, which is usually green but occasionally white. The quadrilaterals are mainly static, but quite a few of them 'pulsate', a bit like a beating heart. Could anyone perhaps explain what all of this signifies, please? I've never seen it mentioned or discussed in this part of the site or anywhere else.

I've always wondered that too. I just guessed that it meant somebody was typing in that particular thread? :D

I believe the "pulsating" ones are relatively "more recently active" threads.

I've been taking a closer look at this, and I think you are on the right lines as far as the word 'active' applies: in fact upon investigation all threads receiving about 24 replies or more seem to get the 'pulsating' mark. But it doesn't appear to be restricted to recent activity, as threads which had their last reply ten years ago still seem to be highlighted in this way if they received sufficient replies.

Still no clearer about why a few quadrilaterals are white whereas most are green though.

My guess is the website is faulty and doesn't update the icons as it should , i still get unread posts when I've read the entire thread.

my guess on the icons are as follows
black dot = threads you are subscribed too
green page in a circle = unread post
white page in a circle = no new posts
pulsating page in a circle = a certain number of posts have been reached in that thread

I think the black dot means you wrote something in that thread.

There is also a setting which automatically subscribes you to threads that you post in

I thought they meant what threads you have read and what you haven't since your current visit to the site.

What I'm now fairly certain about is firstly that the pulsating page means the thread has at least 25 posts, and that the black dot simply refers to the fact that one has posted in that thread. Still not sure about any of the other stuff, but thanks for your replies and opinions!

:D

Edit: I've just noticed that this is the only thread on the page which had a white square, not a green one. I think it's definitely something which indicates a thread one has recently posted in...

test post

Edit: This thread was green before I posted and still green

I just searched for white posts and I've found 3 but I've only posted in two of them

All three posts haven't been posted in since 30th July or earlier
