Vandals Topple Dozens of Headstones, Damage Crypts in Possible Hate Crime: Police

Three young suspects knocked over more than three dozen headstones in a 225-acre cemetery Tuesday and vandalized them with derogatory graffiti, authorities say.

The vandals, believed to be between the ages of 16 and 19, were spotted just after midnight in the Cypress Hill Cemetery along the Brooklyn-Queens border, police said. Officials said they toppled more than 70 headstones and defaced them with racist graffiti targeting Asian and black people, then broke into a mausoleum and damaged the marble stones on the front of about 15 vaults. Biased graffiti was also left there.

Ironically, the Cypress Hills Cemetery is in a heavily "minority" area. I pass by it every so often when I take the Jackie Robinson Parkway (which used to be called the Interborough).

I don't understand the use of quotation marks here. Is something implied? I'm not from NY.

Because so called "minorities" are in the majority in New York City.

Not making a value judgement about "minorities." I'm married to a person who is a member of a "minority."

I admittedly was talking out of emotion. At the very least, they should give the vandals a good beating before handing them over to the police.

I would like to see them sentenced to a lengthy term of grueling community service repairing vandalism.

Indeed! Public shaming / beating would be a suitable punishment / deterrent. Then made to repair the damage they did.

I wonder how they knew who was black (other than, if there was a pic, of course)? I mean, it's probably a near-sure bet that someone named "Wong", "Lee", or "Cheung", for instance, is East Asian (assuming that's what they meant by "Asian")----but, if someone is named "Washington", "Taylor", or "Jackson", for instance, that doesn't, necessarily, mean they're black.

Also, it seems that if someone had a problem with "blacks and Asians", they would've ALSO had a problem with Latinos----yet, the article says the "Santiago" grave was left, untouched.

Unless one has actually seen the vandals, one would not know what "race" they are.

/\ Who said anything about the race of the VANDALS? The article mentioned race when talking-about who the vandals, TARGETED----and, so was *I*! !
