My dentist wants me to take alprazolam for my cleaning and root canal, because I've got really bad dental fear and I don't like needles. I've heard that psych medications sometimes have unexpected effects on autistic people, so I'd like to hear from anyone who's taken this medication and how it affected you.

Talk with your doctor. Might be a good idea. It worked for me.

Alprazolam (Xanax) is a short acting benzodiazepine. In all likelihood you will just feel relaxed and possibly sleepy, that's it.

I'm pretty sensitive to psych meds. But I have been given alprazolam for years as needed without any problems. I'm always given a good dose of it before going to the dentist. It doesn't make me feel differently. It just inhibits anxiety/panic.
