I'm so envious of all you guys in the States. Nothing this spectacular is ever visible in the UK because we nearly always have too much cloud-cover. This place sucks monkey's balls.

salem Oregon, a node along the path of the last American solar eclipse, was totally rained out, which disappointed a LOT of people there that year who had travelled a long ways to see the eclipse there.

OMG rain? We don't live far from there and we had sunlight and clear skies. We drove 45 minutes from our home to see it.

this was in 1979, February, normally a rainy time there. they made up for it this year, despite the mostly cloudy weather prediction they had brilliant cloud-free sunshine this time. that angered me in that I drove all that @#$%ing way to Madras and put up with all that crowding when I coulda just went to Lincoln [also clear] or Salem.

am sort of envious of my girlfriend in that her first day of her highschool senior year also happened to include a solar eclipse.

it has to be a good omen. i wish my senior year started with an eclipse. maybe it would have gone a bit better.
oh well. my fifth semester of college tarted with an eclipse, but is that rally as nice?

totality at 10:18 am, about 66%. took a break from intro to ceramics to go catch it. clouds were forgiving, the sun's shape was well defined but cover was thick enough that i could look at it eyes bare. (no damage)

seems like half the school was outside looking at it. there were telescopes.

"cool."

nonchalantly snapped a photo of it and walked somewhere else.

i'll most likely never see one again.

They're claiming those glances constitute staring? This is just comes off as the usual utter desperation to come up with stuff that's nonsense.

medically speaking, your eyes consider anything longer than a fleeting glance at the sun, as a stare. he did more than fleetingly glance.

Were there loads of dead animals everywhere? Apparantly all the birds fall out of the sky or something, thinking its night. We didn't get to see it here. I'll probably not see one in my lifetime.

there will be 3 solar eclipses [2 annular and one total] in the next decade in your part of the world.

Huh?

No. No "dead animals everywhere" were reported that I know of. Nor do I know why that would be.

You sometimes hear crickets start chirping in a total eclipse because the crickets think its night. That's about it.

I just found out that Trump took the precaution of applying sunscreen to his eyes, so he was protected after all.

Sunscreen doesn't protect you if you look directly at an eclipsed sun.

It only protects against ultraviolet rays.

there are people who went to ERs due to eye damage after they applied sunscreen to their eyes and stared.

Indeed. And I made a joke at their experience.
