RING-A-DING-DING

Did you hear that? That's your environmental wake-up call.

People in government seem more interested in money, which won't save them from potential extinction.

Brazil recently abolished a large nature reserve in the Para and Amapa Amazonian region states, opening them up to mining activities.

Opposition politician Randolfe Rodrigues called it "the biggest crime against the Amazon forest since the 1970s."

Crude dips, gasoline spikes as floods knock out almost a quarter of US refineries

http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/markets/commodities/oil-dips-as-us-floods-cause-large-scale-refinery-shutdowns/article9835656.ece

Quote:
The largest refinery in the United States, Motiva Enterprises' 603,000 barrel-per-day (bpd) plant in Port Arthur, Texas, was shutting down on Tuesday night because of flooding.

Preparing for more rain and floods, Total has cut production in half at its 225,500 bpd refinery, also in Port Arthur.

Restarting plants even under good conditions can take weeks. Harvey has also delayed loading of liquefied natural gas (LNG) at Cheniere's Sabine Pass in Louisiana, the only US LNG export terminal.

Crude inventories

Beyond the impact of Harvey, the American Petroleum Institute (API) had said on Tuesday that US crude inventories fell by 5.780 million barrels last week, an indicator that the US oil market is gradually tightening.

The figures, however, do not reflect the impact from Harvey. Government data for last week is due to be published by the Energy Information Administration (EIA) later on Wednesday.

Traders said that EIA data would take weeks to fully reflect the impact of the storm and floods.

Fortunately, these hurricane victims can count on God to save them.

... oh ... wait ...

^^^ I heard the reason was that the church itself was also partly flooded, making it impractical to use for shelter at first.

He claimed so. Photos showed otherwise. See the story I posted on the previous page. He will probably replace the pews besmirched by the butts of the poor. Unacceptable in his Temple of Mammon.

In Houston in particular, massive suburban sprawl (particularly in Katy, west of H-town) and piss poor land use policies have really screwed up drainage quality. The city has no zoning, and the sprawl has created a whole crapload of impervious cover. (http://www.nemo.udel.edu/manual/Chap2Web.pdf)

Austin and San Antonio have done a reasonable job at addressing IC, because of proximity to the Edwards Aquifer.

Osteen did eventually open up the church.

He is but one of a large number of "prosperity" pastors found in many countries throughout the world.

However, to be fair in this, non of the photos in the linked article show whether or not the church was flooded to any degree. it just shows an old image of the church interior.

My country is home to one of the most active and compassionate relief organizations: Gift of the Givers, which is headed by a Muslim (Su'fi). They help in all countries affected by war or natural disaster irrespective of religion or politics. From their website:

Our assistance is purely humanitarian and unconditional. We assist irrespective of race, religion, colour, class, political affiliation or geographical boundary. We are entirely neutral in our approach to mankind in need, are non-judgemental and have an open-minded approach to all situations. We work with governments to get our assistance delivered but do not align ourselves politically to any party. We have an excellent partnership relationship with the South African Government for the delivery of our local projects, as well as for foreign aid delivery. Our activities have been profiled extensively by the media both locally and internationally.

This is how we should be all be, rather than ask what a person's beliefs are, or what their bank balance is, before lifting a finger.

Kanye West was right. George Bush doesn't care about black people. Neither does Donald Trump.

The corporate media has created climate change.

Plus there's the economic and environmental damage that needs to be factored in.

Did parts of Houston come out of this okay?

I'm amazed that more people didn't lose power, actually. You must have lots of underground wires there. That's why we didn't lose power with Sandy.

A chemical plant exploded in Crosby. Yet another element to this mess....
