Why is too much carbon dioxide bad for your body/lungs?

Because you're not supposed to breathe it in.

You're supposed to expel it from your body.

Carbon Monoxide is the real poison, though.

What bad effects can too much carbon dioxide have on your body if you don't expel it?

Your lungs don't absorb it so although it's toxic it's only the immediate concentration of it that causes a problem. 5% carbon dioxide is where it starts getting dangerous, which is about the same concentration of carbon dioxide that is in your exhaled breath.

If you were in a room with a high concentration of carbon dioxide though then you would know. That need to breathe feeling is not caused by a lack of oxygen but by too much carbon dioxide being in your lungs.

Well, if it can't be excreted then the carbon dioxide will remain inside the hemoglobin proteins on your red blood cells and prevent them from carrying any oxygen. Without oxygen none of your cells can get energy so you will feel more weak and your brain will try to go into low energy mode by reducing the energy given to certain parts resulting in not being able to think very clearly.

It can cause confusion, blurred vision, nausea, or you could pass out.
