I am doing an in depth study into the psychology of cheating.
I see this overwhelmingly a neurotypical problem but I am always after the truth.
If you disagree with my assertion, I really want to know.

Here is an example of the sort of thing I am talking about:

I'd be interested in how the research turns out, psychology is kind of a special interest for me :U

This is a rather complicated topic to analyse and needs to be broken down into a number of elements:

- Age group.
- Psychopathology.
- Mindset.
- Personal agenda.
- Cultural influences.

I will be using The Triune brain model as a basis https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triune_brain.

- The neocortex is responsible for ethical/reasoning behaviour...
- The reptilian brain involves instinctual/intuitive behaviour...
- The limbic brain involves emotional aspects...

Age: I will be using average brain maturity to be in the mid twenties.

Psychopathology in terms of sociopathy and psychopathy will be considered.

Mindset will consider factors such as evolutionary influences.

Personal agenda will consider such things as financial benefits and social activism.

Cultural influences will consider community morality structures.

Triune brain model:

Quote:
Probably the best known model for understanding the structure of the brain in relation to its evolutionary history is the famous triune brain theory, which was developed by Paul MacLean and became very influential in the 1960s. Over the years since, however, several elements of this model have had to be revised in light of more recent neuroanatomical studies

Nevertheless:
Quote:
The model of the triune brain proposed by MacLean in 1970 is a useful piece of shorthand for the complex evolutionary history of the human brain.

Here is a quick description of the Triune Brain Theory:

The influences of age in the propensity towards cheating:

While unethical behaviour in gaming can be seen in most age groups, there is a greater observable frequency in those under the age of 25.
This can be explained by understanding the process of chronological brain maturation and using the Triune Brain Theory.

Quote:
Let's face it. We live in a competitive society. So much of what we do -- from making a living to following professional sports teams -- is a competition. So it's no wonder that children as young as 2 already put an importance on winning. It's this desire to be successful that drives the majority of children to cheat at one time or another.

Quote:
Watch how children play board games or card games and you'll be surprised by the competitiveness, sometimes deteriorating into cheating. Kids under the age of 5 generally don't attach any moral value to cheating. They're just playing. And the kids they're playing with often won't hold a grudge. Kids between the ages of 5 and 7, however, will get a bit more sneaky with their cheating -- quietly taking an extra turn in a game or purposely miscounting when moving a playing piece across a board.

Quote:
At this point, the kids usually know they're doing something wrong, but they don't really care, explains Lawrence Balter, PhD, a child psychologist in New York. By the time a child is 8 years old, however, he's well aware that cheating is wrong. If a child this age continues to cheat, it may be the result of a feeling of inadequacy or underperformance more than a desire to win. And now there's more at risk than just getting in trouble; older children who have habit of bending the rules are often labeled as "cheaters," which can irreparably damage their relationships with their peers.

On average, the human brain isn't fully physically developed until around the age of 25.
During this time, the reptilian and mammalian brains tend to have a dominant influence over the neocortext ("the new kid on the block").
Feelings of inadequacy, for example, enables the reptilian brain to attain dominance as a protective/survival mechanism.

The neocortext is responsible for higher functioning brain processes such as sensory perception, generation of motor commands, spatial reasoning, conscious thought, and in humans, language.
It is also responsible for moral considerations:
Quote:
The neuroscience of morality

One of the first neuroimaging studies investigating these moral dilemmas showed that in more rational, impersonal situations (such as the trolley problem) brain regions involved in abstract reasoning (such as the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex) became more active. While in more emotional, personal situations (such as the footbridge dilemma) brain regions involved in emotional processing (such as the ventral medial prefrontal cortex) were more active.

Organic gaming integrity (as opposed to an indoctrinated morality system through early social influences) is developed via engaging the neocortext which tends to be more submissive to the lesser evolved reptilian and mammalian brains during brain development, hence the propensity/greater-frequency of unethical gaming behaviour in those under 25.

Psychopathology:

The sociopath: Anti-social personality disorder:

Decades of personal involvement in multiplayer First Person Shooter games suggests to me there is a significant element of sociopathy in the player pool.
Through games such as these, an individual with anti-social personality disorder can vent their life frustrations and gain a sense of personal power through the flouting of the rules and via the emotional manipulation of others.

Quote:
What Are the Traits of Sociopath?

Various hallmark sociopath traits are listed below. It is important to note that not all traits will be present in all the sociopaths.

According to ICD-10 criteria, presence of 3 or more of the following qualifies for the diagnosis of antisocial personality disorder (sociopathy):

Callous unconcern for the feelings of others.
Gross and persistent attitude of irresponsibility and disregard for social norms, and obligations.
Incapacity to maintain enduring relationships, though having no difficulty in establishing them.
Very low tolerance to frustration, a low threshold for discharge of aggression, including violence.
Incapacity to experience guilt or to profit from experience, particularly punishment.
Markedly prone to blame others or to offer plausible rationalization for the behavior that has brought the person into conflict with society.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM IV-TR) is another widely used tool for the diagnosis and it defines sociopath traits as:

A) Pervasive pattern of disregard for and violation of the rights of others occurring since age 15 years, as indicated by three or more of the following:

Failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviors as indicated by repeatedly performing acts that are grounds for arrest
Deception, as indicated by repeatedly lying, use of aliases, or conning others for personal profit or pleasure
Impulsiveness or failure to plan ahead
Irritability and aggressiveness, as indicated by repeated physical fights or assaults
Reckless disregard for safety of self or others
Consistent irresponsibility, as indicated by repeated failure to sustain consistent work behavior or honor financial obligations
Lack of remorse as indicated by being indifferent to or rationalizing having hurt, mistreated, or stolen from another

B) The individual is at least age 18 years.

C) There is evidence of conduct disorder with onset before age 15 years.

D) The occurrence of antisocial behavior is not exclusively during the course of schizophrenia or a manic episode.

Mindset:

Evolution:
A mindless mechanism involving continual genetic mutations.
Some genetic coding change improves the organism's survivability and reproduction prospects, and some are detrimental.

Evolution has favoured human neurotypical development.
The combination of the reptilian, mammalian and neocortex has created an effective mechanism for procreation which in turn favours the dissemination of these genetic traits.
With this success comes a hierarchy/echelon which typically favours/priorities emotional/instinctual above intellectual considerations.

Due to the dominance of their emotional nurture/protection needs, memes introduced into neurotypical societies reinforce certain emotion based behavioural patterns.

For example, "instinctual"/primordial needs of social status (ultimately for better prospects of procreation) can become critically important to the individual which can create an aggressive/anti-social/unethical competitiveness. (The end justifies the means...)
This reptilian competitiveness can subvert the mammalian and neocortex value/moral system creating antisocial gaming practices.

In conclusion:
The genesis of the human psychological mindset involved the mindless evolutionary mechanism.
The neocortex allowed the introduction of memes to tweak social emphasis.
The quintessential need for social status through competitiveness can "corrupt" an individual's societal moral benchmark creating anti social gaming behaviour...
