If I cared what everybody thought of me, I'd be in a psych ward right now.

It might mean that the person calling you an "idiot" thinks you can "do better" somehow. I've been called a "idiot" for that reason. The person is trying, through an insult, to make you "improve" in some way. Most of the time, this is misguided and wrong.

Or.....it could mean that the person really wants to insult you for some reason.....usually a lousy one.

It refers to bad decisions. "He is an idiot for going in the ocean when he can't swim"

To understand this you need to know your history

It used to be a diagnositc term like moron and imbecile.

The term idiot used to be teamed up with the word savant, 'Savant Idiot' meaning 'The wise foolish ones' Thisa term was used before autism to discribe people who had fantastic abilities in some areas and areas of difficulties in others. This is what is mean't when people talk about spikey profiles.

The word idiot is quite a strong level on the insulting scale.

One would be foolish to ever call someone an idiot to their face, or even to an acquaintance of the same person.

I would only consider someone an idiot if they did something that was so outrageously dangerous to endanger their own safety and/or the safety of others nearby.

If you understand its root it takes the sting out of it, it is a historical term, those who do not understand it's root could be discribed as idiots I guess in it's crude common useage.

Almost everyone I have ever known has said I am smart. I have a hard time believing them though.

Yes. The word "idiot" was actually used a scientific label up until mid 20th century by shrinks for the lowest level was what is now called "ret*d". I believe that idiot and imbecile were the same grade, just different words. And Moron was a step up in IQ from idiot/imbecile.

So yeah. It aint a pretty word to have hurled at you.

And after the WWII that's why they dropped those labels for the euphemism "ret*d". And ofcourse ret*d itself became an epithet so they later had to find euphemisms for ret*d as well.

Oddly enough the word "idiot" comes from the ancient Greek word "idiotes" ( id-e-o- TEASE) which meant someone who didn't participate in voting or in civic debate in the city state they lived in.

To me, an idiot is one who is of low intelligence. Also used in the context of one who makes poor choices despite being obvious (perhaps only to the observer) that these choices would have unwanted consequences.

Many people have called me this, though not anyone who has ever spoken to me for any measurable amount of time.

In the words of the immortal Taylor Swift, "haters gonna hate".
