What can you do when the fired apartment manager in my building is stealing electricity from the wall outside his apartment? At least I think that's what's happening! He was fired, and when I went down to do my laundry, I saw an extension cord going from the wall socket in the hall to his apartment. Even the maintenance guy said he (the ex-manager) is doing this! He has 30 days to leave, and I don't know how dangerous this is! Please give advice!

If it's a wall socket in the hall, what's to stop anyone using it?

Nothing you can do, he's leaving and obviously angry. So I would advise you to ignore it and not get involved since it's not directly costing you anything.

Personally, I would unplug it every time I walk by

I'm not worried about it costing me money, but I AM worried about it costing me my LIFE! He may be running his whole apartment on one extension cord! And it's hot here - everybody has their A/C on!

The breaker would pop if he was running his entire apartment through one outlet. Basicly preventing him from burning the building down... This is assuming your place is up to code and properly maintained. If you are so concerned, call the new property manager or owner.

In future you might want to suggest that the building owner put a padlocked plastic case over the power point.

Like I said, I wouldn't worry about it from the safety side... I've personally spliced an extension cord and wired it directly into the electrical panel. I then ran the extension cord out the window to a detached garage where I operated everything; lights, heavy equipment and a window AC unit. Never burned the main house down, worse thing was tripping the breaker when I overloaded the circuit. I left it liked this for nearly a year, including through our heavy afternoon thunderstorms.
