The local Walmart recently down sized the CD selection. They used to have a full CD aisle. Now they just have half an aisle of CDs. It seems like pretty soon they won't be selling CDs at all anymore.

I guess it's time I got an MP3 player that uses a memory card so I can download music and have something portable to listen to. Most of my favorite music CDs are too scratched up to enjoy, anyway. Maybe I'll get one for Christmas this year.

This is what happens when the smartphone age has taken effect.

CDs have been going obsolete for over a decade now, but it has been a slow decline. CDs still haven't gone the way of the cassette tape yet, stores still sell them.

I had no idea they still existed. I'm kidding, but I haven't bought one in about five years. It's just so easy to buy music online, plus online you have access to high-resolution formats like FLAC/WAV/OGG. I mostly listen to music on my computer anyway, and in the car (depending on its age, of course) you can use USB drives or an MP3 player to connect to the car's stereo.

I went into my local Walmart and I bought - don't laugh - 4 Beatles CDs for $20. I agree that CDs are going by the wayside in brick and mortar stores. You can still buy a vast number of them on Amazon and Barnes & Nobel.

I thought the title was a song.
I was wondering if it was by the same group who did "Video Killed the Radio Star".
A natural progression.

I still use CDs in the car and in my micro-system at home.

I mostly listen to music on computer or the radio but I still buy CDs sometimes if they're cheaper than buying the DL or if there's bonus content like a Kickstarter campaign where I get some extra songs. I rip my CDs on comp.

Barnes & Nobel is a brick and mortar store.

Guess they will decline, but there will always be some sort of antique collectors or somesuch that keep specialist stored alive, like record stores are being kept alive by hipsters and analogue media lovers. Plenty of stores here in Stockholm where you can buy LP's, Singles and Maxi/EPs.

There is even musicians that print new records like Devin Townsend (albeit a very limited print).

speak for yourself. i bought a bunch of new CDs this last year and my car's stereo is giving them plenty of use.

granted this is only because my ipod bricked itself and i had to break out the old CD player that got used enough on many a european bus...but still!! !

it should be noted that old often doesn't mean obsolete. vinyl isn't obsolete since it offers sound quality and dimension CD or digital can't always replicate easily.

They will still thrive on the secondary used bookstore market.

Why would I laugh?!? I own all the Beatles original releases and several extra releases. My collection includes everything from Bach to Sammy Brue (a 15-year-old blues singer from Utah).

The best thing about CDs is that they provide much better fidelity over digital streaming.
