For reasons of Truth in Advertising, I would like to propose that the PPR forums be re-titled OBVIOUS FLAMEBAIT. There's a certain pattern on here:

1. Post an inflamatory and hyperbolic statement, taking an extreme position on one side of a political/religeous divide. Word it carefully to evoke the hot-button issues of your own "side" while causing maximmum offense to the "other side"
2. Wait and watch while a) "the other side" scream blue bloody murder at you and b) "your side" leap eagerly to your defence.
3. Stir the pot occasionally to encourage both sides to become more extreme and uncompromising. Give yourself a pat on the back once it reaches a level where the rhetoric is like duelling pre-WWII European propaganda posters with a sprinkling of "yo mama."

This is not debate. It is the verbal equivalent of two drunks trying to fight and puking on each other instead. Judging by the PPR forums, if Wrong Planet was a real planet, we'd've nuked ourselves back into the Pleistocene by now.

Ever been on NT forums about similar topics?
It's just a thing about the people and the internet.

Also, the "debate" gets unnecessarily personal.

If you talk about subject, it's assumed you have a vested interest in it.

You are an XXXXX that likes to do XXXX, because you believe in XXXXX.

You can't just be someone who likes to explore ideas.

@OP: Nice try bub.

Socialists are "arrogant" because socialism is based on FACTS.

Centrism isn't the solution. It's the problem. America is messed up because the Democrats won't stop choosing "moderate centrism" over legit leftism.

Political discussion is supposed to be edgy. It's not supposed to be cute and friendly. If you can't handle it, go watch some cartoons.

Think about it.
Politics and religion are two topics best left out of civil discourse if it's to remain civil. The exception being when you know the other parties are like-minded. I've never been able to figure out why an asperger's and autism forum would have a forum for discussing these topics.

Is it possible to have civil discourse with these topics, especially on the internet? Yes, and it does happen but the likelihood of it becoming the norm is low. Either abstain from PPR or roll with it and let the s**t fly, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it to become a place of civility.

OP is infringing on the rights of edgy people.

Back in the good old days, edgy people used to make heavy metal and gangsta rap. Nowadays, those things don't piss people off anymore, so we have been forced into the world of political discourse.

If the political discussions on the internet were toned down, where would all the edgy people go? What would we do with our lives? We'd have to start pulling our pants down in public. How else would we get the attention that we are addicted to?

If you can't handle political discourse, it just isn't for you. You don't see me going to church and asking "Why can't I use profanity here?"

Stuff You Should Do if You Can't Handle Political Edginess:

- Go to church.
- Eat plain white bread.
- Listen to pop music.
- Play Candy Crush or Farmville.
- Use Facebook.
- Watch the Disney Channel.
- Go be a normal person somewhere else.

Wait untill it's at a rolling boil with trolling, personal attacks, dog whistles, red herrings, and straw men, etc....
Some time in there but before the thread gets locked should be some prime entertainment.

This reminds me of a new popcorn popper I just got that goes in the microwave. It has this really nifty top where the butter goes so it melts over the popcorn as it is popping. I used to use that butter spray, but I don't really recommend that. With this popper, I am able to use low fat butter and then this popcorn salt I have should stick to it like glue I hope. I really like the taste of the kettle corn flavor.

@OP:

I've noticed that things are better when an entire forum, not just a folder, is dedicated to a particular idea in question. Being this isn't a philosophy site but rather a site with a philosophy folder, and then one that also mixes politics and religion in with it (or - really folds religion and philosophy into the same gutter as politics) it's pretty much a given.

I actually raised a formal site suggestions to split PPR up into its components because things were going worse than this some ways before to where you couldn't post anything interesting on philosophy or religion because it would be on page 2 in a day or so with all the political gutter-sniping. A few people agreed but I got walled on it by admin - not so much as even a rebuttal against the idea or an acknowledgement that it was heard.

To a degree I have to give moderating staff some credit (which despite the label I've been off of for four or five years now) in that they finally knocked off some of the worse trolls we had, and yes - we did have worse for a while.

Also I learned along the way that you'll have many a bold encounter with Dunning Kruger. When DK shows up, rather than turning beet red and foaming at the lip its better to just break out the popcorn and be entertained.

There is a third - Star Trek.
Looking on relevant forums at discussion about the new Star Trek: Discovery TV show those folks would be right at home here in PPR and some of them would make a lot of our PPR personalities look like wannabe amateurs.

Note: due to effects of autism I don't watch TV and movies, but I still like science fiction and participate as I can how I can.
