Well there is the obvious: Hitler, Nazism, the Holocaust, two world wars, spiked helmets, et al.

But once you put that all away into the backroom of one's mind what do I think of?

Of myself and of the one third of all the other White folks in America who are descended from German immigrants.

Lager beers, BMW (and other over priced old fashioned but still classy products),classical composers from Bach to Beethoven to Wagner.

Beautiful?

Have heard folks rhapsodize about how beautiful particular languages are. But that's the first time Ive ever heard that adjective applied to German.

Not everyone thinks that German is a beautiful language, but I think it is beautiful because of the way the words are spelled and pronounced.
