Slow?
Mentally impaired?
ret*d seems the most correct and explanatory term.

The word "ret*d" has a dictionary definition.

Substituting one word for a euphemism does not solve the problem

For example, "learning differences" used to be called "learning disability". Yes, the "differences" could be an advantage, in some extreme situations. (Fine)

But using the latest greatest politically correct euphemism does not solve problem

I think you're about as "ret*d" as I'm wealthy, which is to say not at all.

I'm ret*d in speech, processing, memory and movement.
This is a medical fact.
I defend the right to use the term ret*d to describe myself, although I would not use it to describe others.

Henceforth I shall be known as 'ret*d Raleigh'.

Am I going too far?

My recognition of appropriate boundaries is also ret*d.

I don't know why this subject annoys me so much.
It's like if someone said you can't use the term Autistic any more because people are using it in an offensive way - which they do.
How would that feel?

Could you perhaps use "impaired" instead?

The problem is, you are grouping me into the "ret*d" category along with you. Which is fine, I ain't gonna judge, just point that out.

It's easy to assume because someone writes well they aren't ret*d in many other areas. Black people liberally use the N word. Can anyone tell us who really are basically ret*d that we can not use the R word?

I don't like the term for the reasons I stated earlier.

It implies that a person is forever "behind," and can never improve.

He doesn't just write well, the *thinks* well. People who are considered mentally challenged don't tend to do that because well, that's sorta what makes them mentally challenged.

Forrest Gump "thought" really well, actually.

He saved a bunch of people from a fiery death in Vietnam.

He is supposed to be "mentally challenged" in some vague way.

I was inspired to run the marathon by Forrest Gump.

I would speculate (with the benefit of reflecting on the many posts about bullying I have read here) that one of the schoolyard's favourite taunts is the R word. If that is correct, then it is going to really trigger some members here, especially those that have or have had PTSD as a result of sustained bullying. WP is first and foremost a support site, and care is needed, whatever your personal feelings about your right to describe others here with R terminology. Please be considerate.

You see the finished post.
You don't know the difficulty I have with understanding the concept, finding the right words and spelling them correctly (thanks, autocomplete!)

It's nice that I appear capable, but isn't that exactly the same beef people on the spectrum have when others say, "You don't look autistic!"?

You don't see the struggle, so it doesn't exist.

When i was 13, I tore a kid's ligaments in his wrist because he called me the "R" word.

I have always used it situationally. I understand to a degree why other people are bothered by it. I'm not though. I write well but it takes me several minutes to write something this brief, even though I have software that helps me out. That's how ret*d I am. It can take me an hour to get dressed if I'm not helped etc. So what is the word for that anyways if not ret*d?

It just means you do things slower than most people. It doesn't mean you're "ret*d."

This sort of thing is frustrating for many people.....but I always say: the final result is more important than the process leading to the final result. Frequently, people get hung up on the "process," and fail to obtain the needed "result."

At least you do get dressed, and you do write your posts.

^ By definition, ret*d actually does mean you do things slower than normal.
