What's the difference between having Avoidant Personality Disorder and being extremely shy?
I'm asking because I suspect I might fit the criteria for AvPd but I'm not able to come to an accurate conclusion.

Why don't you look up the diagnostic criteria for AvPD? The biggest difference (in my opinion) is that shyness is not considered a mental illness because it doesn't significantly interfere with living one's life.
If you are so extremely shy that basic life activities such as work, school, self-care, and socializing are quite difficult, you have something that is considered a disorder, not shyness.
