Newbie here, hello! :) 29/f/UK and looking to make friends on the site, if anyone is interested.

I just wanted to ask, if you don't mind answering, how you came to be diagnosed with Asperger's and how important having your Autism acknowledged is/was to you.

Thank you and have a good day!

Welcome to Wrong Planet! :)

I was diagnosed with AS when I was 13. When my specialist told me, I had no idea what my specialist given that I had other things going on in my life.

PM me whenever you want to write about your experiences.

Hello 12am,

Welcome - have fun making friends on here.

I was diagnosed at college over a year ago through difficulties with my eyes. (thought I had mild dyslexia).

Having it acknowledged wasn't so much important as I didn't expect it - it was a surprise.

Welcome! :D I was diagnosed when I was 7. I guess my parents and teachers saw autistic traits in me and decided to have me tested. At first, I wasn't happy about it. I didn't want to be different, and I didn't like how I had special counselors that none of the other kids had. But I've come to accept it. I don't know how important having my autism acknowledged is to me; since I'm not the type that can pass as NT easily, I've never had my autism questioned.

Hi, I'm also new and trying to figure this site out.

I was diagnosed a year ago, in my freshman year of college. At first I was confused but after I thought about it, it made sense and answered a lot of questions. I'm familiar with my condition now and I know what makes me tick.

It's been like a light bulb turning on for me. I'm so grateful to have discovered what evaded my understanding for over 40 years. Not knowing caused me a great deal of pain and confusion. I still have much to learn but what I've realized thus far has been a gift of enlightenment.

My mother had me tested when I was 4 for being mentally ret*d. I was tested by one man who said I was ret*d. I refused to do anything he asked. The lady at the 2nd opinion tested me and said I was a genius. I liked her, didn't like him. Unfortunately, my mother stopped trying to figure me out after this and because I was said to be a genius, she ridiculed me more because she believed then I was just being obstinate and rebellious and difficult :(

hello :) i was diagnosed with uncommon form of sensory autism 10 months ago. previous diagnoses were personality disorder and schitzophrenia, which i knew were wrong so just carried on pursing an ASD diagnosis.
being officially diagnosed with ASD changed my life. it gave me meaning/context for how my life had played out so far, and how it was playing out, why people reacted to me the way they did, why i could not do things. suddenly i wasnt irresponsible or lazy or stupid of any of the other labels i had been given over the years - and it was liberating. i could give so much more energy and time to myself, instead of trying to do all the things i was expected to do but was never going to be able to do.
i am also lucky in that i have had excellent post-diagnostic support from the psychologist who assessed me as ASD. she is herself ASD and runs a trust here in NZ for ASD adults living independently. my assessment included a three paged list of resources from the trust library on my type of autism, post diagnostic issues, mental health and ASD, biographies, executive function, etc. the trust also runs support groups every month.
i really feel that in that assessment and this post support i was acknowledged as being who i am, rather the expectations of others. it was more a case of "lets see if you have AS" rather than "lets see whats wrong with you" - ie not NT.
being diagnosed was so important to me, getting it right, being acknowledged. it enabled me to move on into a new life, that i live more fully who i am, because i now know who i am
