The Australian government has conducted a poll of voters on whether or not to legalise same-sex marriage in Australia. There's been an often toxic national debate over the last couple of months, from both sides of the issue.

Nationally, 79.5% of voters responded in the survey: 61.6% voted YES to legalise same-sex marriage, with 38.4% voting NO.

Now, the Australian government will now introduce legislation to pass same-sex marriage into law. This is expected to be completed by Christmas.

Mainly the Western suburbs had a majority of No voters in Sydney, which have a lot of immigrants from conservative backgrounds. Inner city Sydney would've had some of the highest support in the country.

Heck, even WA and Qld had more support than NSW, and they're both probably the most conservative states in the country. The brilliant thing about the ABS running the survey is that they released a huge amount of statistics about the vote (https://marriagesurvey.abs.gov.au/results/). Great reading.

And to top it off, later that same day Australia qualified for the World Cup next year.

Brilliant day all round! :wtg:

Yes you'd think so given Sydney is the host of the gay Mardi Gras

Technically it's the 74% of the public who voted that should be thanked

There is, however, a conspiracy theory going around that ballots were deliberately not circulated to conservative areas which seems preposterous as we have a conservative government where more than half of the sitting members are against same sex marriage (code for homophobic).

And now the Australian Parliament has voted to legalise same-sex marriage: :D  :D  :D

https://www.9news.com.au/national/2017/ ... riage-bill
(The article has videos of celebrations in the House of Representatives as the bill is passed.)

UPDATE: The Governor-General will soon sign the bill into law, which will probably come into effect this weekend (not next month, as initially reported). Weddings for same-sex couples will then start a month after that (in Australia, couples must generally give at least one month's notice to a celebrant before being married).

^ It was just talking about a last-ditch attempt to stall the bill by Tony Abbott and Kevin Andrews, two of the more prominent SSM opponents in the Australian parliament.

It didn't work, and even their own party colleagues were irate with them over it.

The Yes vote still prevailed. :D

Funny post on Twitter from @PeteDillon, after today's vote:

If you’re ever wondering what the wrong side of history looks like, just look to the right of frame.

Image

For context, during the final vote MPs supporting the bill (legalising SSM) had to assemble to the left (of frame), while opponents – all four of them – assembled to the right.

Surprised senator Lyjenholm didn't have a go?

Can we assume that those people who did not take part (the 20.5%) refused to participate because they thought the very idea itself (i.e. same-sex "marriage") was ludicrous? If we can, then the actual percentage of the total population who endorsed this batty idea was far less than 61.6.
