(clicky)11 smart things the Finns are doing that we oughta consider
why can't America do some of these things? why is it so many americans believe we are the end-all and be-all of everything and not amenable to good ideas from elsewhere?

Exceptionalism taken way too far.

Instead of calling each other deniers and hoaxers we could learn a thing or two from the Dutch about flood control and holding back the sea.

finland: small, relatively homogenous country with small population

america: massive, diverse country with 320 million people

that may have something to do with difficulty of imitation. :|

i would love good roads where you don't have to worry about your suspension bottoming out over manhole sized potholes, or your tires shredding.

i would love to be able to trust the government be competent enough to make drinkable tap water a possibility everywhere

...and i would especially like to trust my countrymen enough to give my children free taxi rides to school without having to worry about something awful happening to them....(i must go with them)

but i may not see it in my own lifetime.

that all seems very expensive. there's a reason you see it more often in lowly populated countries.

8. In Helsinki, they have automated waste collection

Several sectors of Helsinki have an automated solid waste collection system. When you throw the trash out, it’s sucked into a tube and sent to the main waste sorting station at 70 kph. This means no garbage trucks and no smells.

i can picture attempts to implement this here bring stopped and stagnated by lobbying and protests. i can picture a darker side to this in fact....

At first, AB, I thought your thread title was about these Finns: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finn_Brothers

whose music was considered a very good thing in NZ and Australia (and still is). You made me smile!

Good article. :-) Lots of great innovation in the world that the US seems to ignore.

Of course I picked "ice cream" lol

I've met a few Finnish people, and have found them rather laconic, though respectful.

Do I envy them? No.

Weird ... Finish people get mortgage loans for apartments ....

I imagine this is reflective of how poor they are.

...Mentioning Finland makes me think of an illustration in a children's history book of Finns ski-ing around in a forest to illustrate Finn partisans fighting back against Nazi Germany, I think it was. That's like this is one of those " What is the first thing you think of when I say ____" threads! :D

It would be weirder if they didn't get mortgages.

Most people rent apartments in America, rather than own them as co-ops or condominiums.

Most people have mortgages for private houses in America. Some, not the majority, are "free and clear," in that their mortgage is paid in full.

Some, a minority, rent whole private houses.

Actually, the Finns were famous for fighting the Soviets. Because the Finns had viewed the Germans as liberators after the Soviets were pushed out of their country, Finland became the only democracy in the Axis Powers.
