Our Foreign Minister is part of the new coalition government here and has served in previous government as Foreign Affairs Minister in the 1990s, and got on very well with Condoleeza Rice and other USA officials. Speculation in New Zealand is that Tillerson has asked our Foreign Minister to visit North Korea on a diplomatic mission and that this may be announced by the USA next week.

It is believed here by sources close to the action that NZ and Tillerson have agreed on this already, though Trump may want to veto peace attempts and who knows what his response will be.

? Not sure who you mean.

Condoleeza Rice in her time asked the same NZ Foreign Affairs Minister to visit North Korea and negotiate, which he did, and some compromises resulted between the USA, China and North Korea at that time. So it is quite possible that Rice has reminded Tillerson of this (or informed him if he didn't know it) and suggested that he approach New Zealand again.

I guess that's more the kind of ill-qualified person that Trump would pick? This Foreign Minister of ours has relevant diplomatic experience so Trump will possibly veto any suggestion from Tillerson for that reason.

The latest judge pick of Trump's certainly raised international eyebrows to a new high - the guy with little experience of legal practice whose wife works at the White House; Trump's choices in diplomatic representatives seem not much better given the bozo he sent down here. So Trump possibly won't want anyone more suitable mediating on sensitive issues with NK in case it makes Trump look like an inexperienced incompetent.

We will see. Tillerson may make this an either/or issue - "do it or I resign" - and maybe Trump wants Tillerson to resign for the reason stated in the last sentence of the last paragraph. It's hard to know as not much follows a logical course with Trump, it's more about his ego and who is willing to say what Trump wants to hear (which makes him so very easy for heads of state like Putin to play - they know all they have to do is appear to flatter him). At least, that's what I think.. true believers won't agree.
