What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Kmart?

A nearly defunct store chain. No Kmarts in my area anymore.

...Going our of business?
A K-Mart in Watsonville, an hour away, still carried Archie comics digests the last time I was there - Iwonder if they stil do :? ?
We didn't have K-Mart where I grew up - because of a similar, if smaller-scale, chain called Caldors' had that portion of the market covered :| .

Merry-go-rounds. All the Kmart stores where I grew up had coin operated merry-go-rounds out front.

Practically out of business. The one in my city closed down two years ago & one near my parents closed down about 10 years ago & the other near them closed down this year.

One of my first jobs was at a Kmart. I didn't last long and that location later closed but there is still one in my area that I go to often. I guess the first thing that comes to mind is the shirts we had to wear.

The shirts I wore for the job said "Attention Kmart Shoppers!" on the front and then something random on the back :)

Loss. Because of so many closings. They're owned by Sears, and it's circling the drain as well. (After buying Lands' End, natch, which will either be sold off or go under.)

I remember Caldor, and Jamesway, and Alexander's, and Hutzler's, and S. Kline, and E.J. Korvette, and Woodward&Lothrop, and any number of "deadmalls" that were anything but dead, back then.

It's a bad thing, all these retail closings. Retail was one of the few jobs that couldn't be offshored - so instead we're all being conditioned to buy online. (Which I won't do, unless I absolutely can't find the thing in meatspace, because people have to eat! They need jobs!)

Did not the mods move these topics to the games section so we don't have to dig through an endless avalanche of "first thing that comes to mind"?
Please reconsider doing this again, a lot of people found it very annoying and they were moved for that reason.

A smaller-scale version of Wal-Mart or Target.
