By which I mean of course the major American holiday, founded by Abraham Lincoln in 1863 because he needed a national origin myth to cement a fractured nation. The Pilgrims themselves didn't celebrate any holidays and would be shocked by this one.

And isn't it interesting how in classrooms American history seems to leap frog from Columbas to the Pilgrims to the late 18th century? Most Americans outside of the New England states are ignorant of what happened a few decades after the founding of Plymouth and know little or nothing about King Phillips War or Ben Church.

Most Americans know very little about our history, because it was written out of the books. No wonder history looks like "his story". For example, in the 10 years after slavery was banned, there were more black people in politics than any other time in history, including today. And then this is what riled up the KKK, who lynched African Americans into submission, really sad. :(

The public is generally aware that during Reconstruction African Americans in the South were enfranschised and even elected to Congress. They wouldn't have this level of freedom again until the 1970s. Hell, in Mississippi interracial marriage was illegal as late as 1987.

I wasn't aware that it was at a level even higher than today until recently though. I think in Alabama, interracial marriage was legalized much later than 1987 even.
