...There was a radio mini-series in the 70s known as " The History Of Rock & Roll ", produced by Drake-Chennault, which did this with a chronological segue of BILLBOARD #1 hits, a few seconds of every Billboard #1 in order.
I remember hearing it and I think I taped at least some of it on my little box radio/tape player at the time! 
It's long gone, alas 
. As is everything I had from then

Anyway , it can be found on YT - In three parts! - as " History of Rock & Roll Timesweep ".
