Just a few days ago, my sister {who has Generalized Anxiety Disorder} began using Zoloft to treat and control her GAD, which she was diagnosed with last month.

I also have begun a treatment of Prozac to treat and control my own GAD, but what I am worried about are common side effects of both antidepressants that may complicate our treatments.

So my question is: What are some common side effects in Prozac that I should be aware of and what are common side effects of Zoloft that my sister should be aware of? We are just helping each other, but I am asking for input.

Dont know about Zoloft but Prozac common side effects can be ( I've bolded the ones I've experienced and underlined the ones I still get after 2 months)

sleep problems (insomnia), strange dreams;

headache, dizziness, vision changes;

tremors or shaking, feeling anxious or nervous;

pain, weakness, yawning, tired feeling;

upset stomach, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea;

dry mouth, sweating, hot flashes;

changes in weight or appetite;

stuffy nose, sinus pain, sore throat, flu symptoms; or

decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm.

Prozac can give you suicidal thoughts but that's generally in younger people.

Here's a complete list of side effects.

Edit: I find there is a big difference in effectiveness between branded and generic Prozac

I've been on both.
With Zoloft I got terrible stomach, never ending derealization, sleepless nights. I stopped taking it after 4 months and changed to Cipralex. Cipralex gave me no side effects but after years my doctor decided that it wasn't helping enough so he changed it to Prozac.
With Prozac I was for about two weeks in a manic state, had terrible heart palpitations, was hyperactive and I wasn't able to endure the clothing I wore. I was very irritable and I wanted to rip my clothes off. Now it's been a few months that I'm on Prozac and the side effects are gone. Only I can't sleep well but for that I was prescribed sleeping pills.

Next Question:

What foods and beverages should be avoided while taking Prozac or Zoloft?

Prozac made me manic; I LOVED THAT STUFF! Then my shrink took it away.
*sigh*

In moderation I don't think there is any food or beverage that needs to be avoided while taking Prozac ( don't know about Zoloft ) , it is probably different if you take supplements as a concentration of food will be different. A high intake of caffeine can increase risk of serotonin syndrome , my body tells me when I've had too much coffee ( anxiety and tremors )

Stay away from grapefruit/grapefruit juice as it modifies the effect of all SSRI's.
