Then there's the 46,000 "investor immigrants," who paid their bribe money to the Province of Quebec in order to enter Canada and then skipped town to Toronto or Vancouver and stashed $$$ into real estate piggy banks. There are SO MANY multi-millionaires in China that they just keep coming and it's distorted our hottest real estate markets to the nth degree.

This is the crux of the issue. There are strong links in both our political parties here in Australia with the Chinese government and one labor minister was sacked for taking gifts from a Chinese company.

The statistics published on foreign ownership of residential housing does not explain why entire inner city suburbs in Melbourne and Sydney are completely owned by overseas Chinese? (bribery?) Older residents have complained over (among other things) the demolition of attractive inner city period character homes to be replaced by ostentatious ugly mansions (we call them "Mcmansions) and the replacement of family owned businesses with ultra expensive boutique stores and businesses catering exclusively for a Chinese market with no English signage (hence the invasion analogy)

I can guarantee if their is a home auction in any postcode 30km from the CBD then a Chinese buyer will outbid everyone else. New home buyers are moving further away. Established home owners (like myself) feel socially isolated and no longer feel like we live in a community. It's like a foreign country just sprung up in our neigbourhood

See, the biggest difference here is that Vancouver was already ~1/5th Chinese, so when they began coming in higher numbers there wasn't the same culture shock or resistance. Some areas have been all Chinese signage for many years - there are some complaints about it, but we're used to it.

Here they've bought up most of the most expensive properties, many 100+ year old heritage house mansions... some being restored, but most being renovated to be even bigger. One that I was working on up until a career shift last Summer is going to end up costing $60-65M CDN by the time it's complete, most of that for the restoration & renovation of this 118yo 9,000sf mansion into 18,000sf including under ground parking & a music studio. In some parts of that neighbourhood, 80-90% of the mansions are empty pretty much year round - they're just piggy banks. But besides ultra luxury products, they're buying up condos to the extent that some buildings have nearly no lights on at night because no one lives there. It's all one giant game of monopoly and the developers are building ever more expensive luxury condos that cost millions of dollars per unit, so there's a zero % chance any working class people here could ever afford to live in them. Apparently we've constructed 19% more units than we need, but we have such a housing crisis that rents are astronomical and availability is near 0. It's stretched way out into the suburbs and other cities hours away - especially as people cash out here and then relocate, it's the boomers who've sold out in Vancouver who are now driving prices in retirement areas through the roof, too. Property valuations are driving property taxes so sky high that decades old businesses are closing. Restaurants are closing because they can't afford the rent & taxes nor find kitchen staff. etc.

The whole thing is insanely unsustainable, because we won't have a vibrant city if literally no one can afford to live here if they work here to earn their income. Soooo, either there's a market correction at some point (crash) or this place becomes a ghost town ?? Somehow I doubt wages are going to skyrocket to match housing costs. lol

If the trend continues then what you will have is entirely Asian inner city zones. Of course it will take a while but China has no shortage of wealthy migrants. It's not millionaires either. In Australia you get automatic residency with $500,000 dollars.

This means the rest of us will live outside (I live exactly 30km from the CBD), real estate companies are getting greedy and developers are giving new inner city condominiums names like "golden sunset" and "pearl palace" to give a false air of prestige to eager Chinese buyers.

People come to the city like they are travelling on a holiday

I already live 45kms from downtown Vancouver and this 10 year old 3 bedroom 2.5 bath + finished bsmt w/ 1bd & bath 3200sf 3 level house on a lot not much bigger than its footprint is would fetch approx $1.1M or so right now. Even 75-100+km from the city is still unaffordable so people are living in small condos with huge mortgages and long commutes. People still live everywhere they’re just more and more house poor by the day.

Yep. Same as our developments here.

A 3,200 square foot house would be a gigantic house in much of the New York City area.

Many people in the really urban parts live in less than 400 square feet.

There are buildings now renting 100sf microsuites, other neighbourhoods where condos are all 350-350sf, sizes in between, few thousand sf penthouses, neighbourhoods full of 60+yo 1500sf houses, other areas where few houses are smaller than 8,000sf and some more than 20,000. Hell, some have helipads.

In my area of the suburbs most newer detached homes are around 3000sf, but several blocks away and most are more like 4500-5500 and have 2-4 basement suites in them.. several blocks in another direction and there's two "farmhouses" side by side like 5 feet apart that I think are identical/mirror image of each other that are roughly 10,000sf a piece.

The suburban neighbourhood I grew up in, average houses were more like two floors around 2,500sf with much larger lots.

There's a huge variance from microsuites as small as 100sf (dorm room pretty much lol) to sprawling country estates with mega-mansions on them.. there's something for everyone so long as you're a very wealthy Chinese person. :P

Just to bring this post back on topic, I'm pretty sure Trump would do a porn star in every last one of them if he could.

If Trump wasn't POTUS and he was screwing pornstars. nobody would give a toss...the bigger irony is the millions of die hard christians who voted for him. All the bible belters probably know deep down that Trump would be the type of person to molest their 16 yr old daughters but voted for him anyway...go figure

Some are, most aren't. What's troubling is that none seem to care if neonazis are a major electorate block. Guilt by association is a problem where romanticized war crimes are concerned.

Mmhmmm.. methinks it has a lot more to do with him being a tall white (orange; close enough for them I guess) male than anything to do with his religious beliefs.

Just a reminder, a lot of Democrats were rooting for this person to run for president in 2020.

Who's that guy?

And one could call this pic many different things.. some may see it as sexual harassment, others a common joke w/ no real harm to anyone. But the optics of it potentially being viewed as negative vs a sense of humour aren't exactly good for anyone seeking public office. But then again, it's a reminder that politicians are human, too, and come with a past full of mistakes.

My take on this pic? Depends on all the things we don't know about it.. like the situation, whether they know each other or not & how well and what their relationship is like etc. One still frame isn't enough to say this is definitively crossing the line or it's just a joke between friends when one falls asleep before the other.

He was a prominent US senator, a lot of democrats hoped would run for president, molesting a sleeping US soldier. Most everyone here knows his name and what he was known for before his political career.

Is he, though? Or is that just hyperbole?

Take a close look at the pic. His left hand clearly isn't touching her vest. The shadows cast by his right hand indicate it likely isn't, either. It appears his hands are hovering above for the intended comedic affect of this photo (which is more something you'd expect at a frat party vs. by a politician, but still) & he is not actually molesting anyone.

He didn't actually touch her. Usual conservative digging for dirt, except it ain't that big a deal...

Trump on the other hand;
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng- ... -full-list

This is a big deal...If not for the fact he's a billionaire and POTUS he would have been behind bars a long long time ago...

This is pretty funny you two. If it's a democrat presidential hopeful displaying lewdness in a photo, it's just hyperbole. If it's trump making a comment on a bus, he's guilty.

As far as allegations against Franken go, there are plenty of them. I find it telling that you two foreigners don't seem to have a clue about about who Al Franken is or anything about him.

Al Franken sexual misconduct allegations: After 8 women came forward, the Minnesota senator plans to resign.

Before his political career he was on SNL for years:

You're a man of facts & evidence, EzraS. Have a look at the photo and you'll see the same thing as me. He's not actually touching her, so your statement that he is molesting her is false. Besides that, I acknowledged that the joke is in poor taste for a politician.

I HAVE heard the name Al Franken w/ regards to sexual misconduct allegations in the news recently, I just didn't know what the guy looked like.

So, the guy was on SNL.. makes more sense that that's why his sense of humour is the way it is w/ this pic, too. He made a career of frat boy humour.
