Hello,

I am pursuing an English degree at my local community college. I was wondering if there are any English majors here. Have you been able to find employment that allows you to earn a livable income? If so, what kind of work do you do?

My sister was a proofreader. Grading papers without having students

I was an English major.

With a bachelor's degree in English, you can get jobs that require a bachelor's degree. Nothing else, really. But it does give you an advantage over those who don't have a bachelor's.

The bachelor's in English is certainly not a "terminal" degree.

But neither is Speech Pathology, which was my other major.

Both require at least a Master's before they can be of much use to you.

I am still unsure exactly what I want to do with my degree. I am looking into technical writing, and proofreading right now. I am trying to keep an open mind, while still trying to find out as much information as I can about what career options are available.

I know one guy who majored in English who is now a noted singer/songwriter. Another who majored in Journalism who is also a singer/songwriter and has appeared in walk-on parts in some tv series.

She originally wanted to be an English teacher. Growing up she would check my homework before I could go to bed. She mostly checks transcripts from court reporters (trials and other legal meetings). She likes it because it is full of drama.

Yes, an example of that fact many workplaces require technical writers to have at least some amount of knowledge about what the company specifically specifies in.

I'm still pursuing my Bachelor degree in English with wanting a career in either journalism or in film as a writer.
