Melbourne heat waves can get nearly as hot as Adelaide heatwaves. The difference is that Melbourne is one of those places that can have four seasons in one day.

My impression is that the 100-degree days are uncommon, and the heatwaves don't last more than a couple of days (at least in the areas nearer the sea).

But they certainly are doozies......45 Celsius doesn't seem to be uncommon, even in Melbourne. We've only been over 40 Celsius a couple of times in New York. In my lifetime, it hasn'tonce risen to 40 Celsius.

I would guess more inland areas stay hot longer.

New York heat waves would be worse because you have more humidity.

That's true....and they usually last longer.

And it rarely gets truly cool in summer, unlike Melbourne. To have a low below 15 Celsius throughout July and August is quite anomalous.

It's days like this when I think the reason why I can't see the purpose of life is because it's too obvious.

No I can't. I can't see it because it's too obvious.

I've been told I can't see what's in front of me that is plain [obvious] to everybody else. and they were right, I indeed could not see what they were talking about.

Maybe the obvious meaning of life is that I should just be happy to live my normal day to day life without any higher goals. I don't think I could live like that. I at least need career goals or financial goals or something or otherwise it feels so vapid.

Yes I am but I was thinking of buying a house or condo instead.

if you invest your money for now in interest/dividend-bearing investments, it will make your house purchase easier.

I get depressed because hardly anything or anyone in life lives up to my imagination. No matter how good-looking, how rich, how cool or how amazing they seem, I am inevitably disappointed because I have looked or judged them through a shallow gaze

at your age, as much as you can comfortably spare, plus a little more. at least 10% of your yearly income plus whatever tax return you get and whatever other found money you get. to a limited extent, buy during dips or downturns, you don't have to get the timing exactly right [you'd need a time machine for that] but don't buy at "full price." buy ONLY investments that pay a historically reliable dividend of at least 5%. there are several, such as Blackstone group, that pay 8+% and so far have been reliable. AT&T is about as blue chip as they come and they have long paid over 5%. certain energy REITs and MLPs pay over 8%, but tread carefully. using the rule of 72, an 8% yield would double your principal [via accrued compounded interest/dividends] in 9 years, assuming you did not add to the pot. I lack a financial calculator at the moment but if you added 10% yearly, timed at the downturns [think of them as discount sales], your effective interval for doubling principal would shrink substantially from 9 years. I am not a professional so take this as a sketch and not a definitive guide. but my relations do this and they are pretty well off.
a caveat- these are not "set and forget" investments, you must monitor them. corporate management have feet of clay and can screw up, causing a lack of market confidence=loss of stock value/loss of principal which in reality matters only when you have to withdraw the money. good luck. :star:
