In this thread, we talk about really old cartoons that we like.

^^^
I've watched this one so many times, I practically have it memorized. I love it. It's spooky! It's twisted! They don't make toons that are this awesome anymore.

I don't know how old you mean; old is going to be different depending on the age of the person. There's only a few animations that I've seen that were released before my date of birth, and those include Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, which came out in 1984 and 1986 respectively. Obviously, they are films I've seen well after their release date.

Growing up one of my favourite shows was The Animals of Farthing Wood, which was a serialised drama that came out in 1993. At the time it was novel to me as most of the animated shows airing on television were episodic, and more focused on comedy or action. It's the only show I have any memory of ever regularly tuning into as I stopped watching television from my teens.

Well, it's not really a cartoon, it's an anime; but I love Astro Boy. I love the 60s and 80s Astro Boy series (not the 2003 one, I really do not like that one!) I just love the B&W with the 60s anime style. And I also love Osamu Tezuka's works! Kimba The White Lion is another great one!

REALLY old (20's and 30's) animated cartoons are quite fascinating.

Often horribly racist, and awful.

But often they can be quite touching, and meaningful.

As a kid in the Sixties I recall seeing a Twenties era cartoon that was post-apocalyptic.

It was a Christmas thing. Little animals were all living in houses made out of the helmets of slain human soldiers on the battlefield. The daddy squirrel explained to the kid squirrel that the reason for that was that humans didn't head the spirit of Christmas, have good will and peace, and wiped themselves out in a big war. Heavy stuff for a kid cartoon.

A few years ago was channel surfing and stumbled upon the cartoon network at an off hour when they showed vintage cartoons. Saw a tale about a family of owls. The daddy owl spoke with a German Vienna accent and sang opera. The son owl was intimidated by the daddy owl and would freeze up when he tried to sing. But when he was away from dad he could sing his own little pop ditty. The Dad heard the boy owl sing his ditty, and got enraged, and hurled the worst insult a 1920's opera singing owl could say: "you! you! JAZZ singer! Get out of my house!".

Later on the boy owl auditions to be on "the Jack Bunny Show". Stands in line behind other cartoon animals. All of the other animals get rejected. He takes his turn to sing. Suddenly he sees his dad, and starts to freeze up, but the dad prompts him to sing the boys own ditty. Then the boy gets confident. Does his own thing. Wins the audition. And has a reunion with his parents. A quaint and funny as hell cartoon, but also a rather touching lesson in acceptance. Wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry.

I like the Tex Avery cartoons from the 50's and 60's. Really, anything where a scared wolf or cat would scream so forcefully that their eyes popped out inches in front of their skulls.

I'm old, so I grew up watching Underdog and similar cartoons from the early 70's. Those were pretty funny, especially Rocky and Bullwinkle.

And, oh yeah, some of those pre-war cartoons were racist as hell. I've seen quite a few featuring black face characters. Then again, in one episode of The Little Rascals, Mrs. Crabtree says, "You, little n*gger boy in the back. What's the answer?" or something like that. In those days, that kind of language and cartoon caricature was the norm.

Yes, some cartoons from that era were racist, but we should be careful not to overstate that racism.

Many of those old cartoons had black voice actors and jazzy soundtracks. Back in those days, jazz had the same social stigma that hip-hop has today. In other words, it was seen as "not for white people".

That's one thing that you have to remember when watching those old cartoons. Some of them were racist. Others were progressive. Of course, when an old cartoon is progressive, it just looks normal from our modern perspective because we've forgotten how far we've come.

This old Disney cartoon clearly has an anti-racist message.
VVV

Another Thing: Some of those old cartoons aren't as racist as they appear to be on the surface. Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs is a good example of this. Most of the voice actors in that cartoon were black.
