Professor fails US student over Australia being a Country

A US student said she was left stunned after her professor failed her on an assignment because she "incorrectly" identified Australia as a country.

hmmm I knew Americans were bad at geography but for a professor to fail a student over this?

That's absolutely crazy.

That professor should be disciplined for that.

Something screwy here?
Perhaps the context of the assignment pertained to Australia being a continent but doesn't explain the "fail"?

Australia is a sovereign nation which happens to be on its own continent.

I don't believe anybody will dispute that-----unless they're speaking in Newspeak or something.

Australia is both a continent and a country...but I'm curious to know what country or countries the professor thought existed there.

Perhaps it was a geology assignment?

There are a few islands (e.g., Tasmania) which are not in the continental mass. But, still.....Australia the country is conterminous with Australia the continent.

Yes I think it would be good to actually see the Professor's comments?

I’ll reserve judgment until I see the graded assignment, but sadly, I’ve known multiple ed profs who could do something that silly.

But Australia is a country as well as a continent.

On a completely separate matter the student in question is quite cute and might be trying to generate "likes" on her social media profiles (call me a cynic)

I'm not so stupid and naïve (though I am naïve) that I would, definitely, say, that this is so straightforward.

What was the question being asked, anyway, in the exam?
