Hard to believe but some of the innovations in rap like grandmaster flash are already old enough to be on a pension
I was one of the few into rap and hiphop in my highschool when it was still underground.Public enemy spoke of a political struggle and the way they communicated was an art form not unlike jazz music when it first emerged
Talk about "devolution" reminds me of how some random white music critic claimed James Brown's music is no longer relevant. Then Robin William's movie "Good Morning Vietnam" came out in 1987 and James's Brown's "I Feel Good" suddenly reminded people of their own childhood and the times of their life long past.
Music is subjective and I find it lame when people talk about hiphop "devolving" as if they are the arbiters of music standards
