Lie to save face?

Despite having said he had a long term sexual relationship, my friend exclusively pursues online sexual activities. He said he hadn't had sex in years and doesn't have feelings for his ex anymore. Do you think he lied about the girlfriend? He seems honest with all else. I thought maybe this was online, as well.

I don't see any reason for him to lie.

I guess he could be ashamed that he's actually never had a relationship.

This is one of those things where "you have to be there" in order to form a proper opinion.

Also while lying (if he did) isn't good, I think I could understand it in something like that.
