I figured this was on something else, considering we already have a thread on it... But again, the blame is on the FBI and not us.
Certainly, the FBI had an obligation to investigate potential threats and failed, however every time one of these shootings happens, people try to find a "defect" within the person to attribute it to, and in a few of these instances, the "defect" they have settled on has been Asperger's Syndrome or autism, though a predisposition towards violence or anti-social behavior is not a fundamental characteristic of either or even part of the diagnostic criteria.
Most of the violence perpetuated by people on the spectrum is 1. perpetuated by children and is not entirely age inappropriate. 2. directed at
themselves and when it is directed at another person, it is typically a parent or teacher who is in direct contact with the person and is almost always defensive and not offensive, and a result of a communication breakdown or an intrusion upon the person on the spectrum on the part of the other party.
This tendency to attribute these shootings to the "defect" of an ASD is scapegoating that arises from shoddy diagnostic standards on the part of the mental health industry....ASDs have become the ADHD of the 21st century, often assigned as a diagnosis to children who are just difficult to deal with, and society's refusal to accept that mass shootings of this nature, which are, so far, unique to the United States, are due to a complex interplay of environment, personality, and culture, possibly combined with the influences of testosterone on that individual.
Not only the FBI
Alleged Florida school shooter Nikolas Cruz was reported to FBI, cops, school -- but warning signs missedQuote:
Cruz reportedly had dozens of run-ins with law enforcement prior to Wednesday's shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High dating back to 2010. Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said Friday that there were "20 calls for services in the last few years."
"Everyone of these calls for service will be looked at and scrutinized," he said.
Many 911 calls emanated from 80th Terrace St. in Parkland – the suburban address where the teenager lived with his younger brother, Zachary, and their adoptive mother, Lynda, BuzzFeed reported.
The calls – dating as far back as 2010 and continuing until November 2016 – shed a light on two erratic and violent boys who repeatedly “threw items,” were “out of control” and fought with their mother and each other on an apparently regular basis.
Despite the repeated calls to authorities, Cruz was never arrested – and was basically cleared as being “no threat to anyone or himself,” as one therapist said in a police report from Sept. 28, 2016.
In that particular call, the sheriff’s office said Nikolas and his mother were fighting over paperwork needed for him to get an ID card. In their report, deputies detailed how the teen had been harming himself and had talked about buying a gun.
The therapist on scene, Jared Bienenfeld with Henderson Mental Health, and the deputies concluded there were “no signs of mental illness or criminal activity.”
