Wow, I applied to a job less than an hour ago and one of my references messaged me saying she was already contacted by them! Is that normal???

Having your references checked is a good sign that you are seriously being considered for the position. How fast it they did it is unusual, but probably just a matter of lucky timing for you, by whoever is checking applications.
