hi,
im new here. i decided to join to see if this planet makes more sense to me. my psychiatrist has diagnosed me with what he calls 'mild aspergers'. im not sure i agree...because i dont have the classic type of symptoms such as lack of eye contact or repetitive movements. its all quite confusing atm. i have a sister who is a psychologist and she thinks im just shy and a drama queen and not even close to being an aspie. Um, the psychiatrist diagnosed me as an aspie because ive always been very shy and had tremendous difficulties with friendships. I also didnt crawl and started speaking way earlier than normal, and he thinks thats a sign. Also, i get frustrated easily and can end up shouting over little things. Im also not able to understand people's intentions. Not so much the feelings, but the intentions.

Hi welcome to WP, I think an autism specialist once said: "no two aspies are the same". That may be true but I would say there are some very common traits. The one I notice a lot is a lack of effect: facial expression, gestures are muted when communicating alongside an aversion to change, a preference for being alone and intense interests. Great advice from a previous poster on this thread have a good look through the forum and see if you can relate to any of the posts. Best wishes.

Hi,

I just joined too. I can relate to some of what you said: I was semi-officially diagnosed by a therapist. I took several tests, both with her and alone, which put me squarely in the spectrum; I have not, however, been diagnosed by a psychiatrist. Some people have questioned my status, saying in effect, "But you're too normal." Ha! I think that over time I have been pretty good at separating what goes on inside me from what I show the world.

My therapist has told me over and over that people on the spectrum are more diverse than NTs are. I am fortunate enough, I suppose, that I do not need an official diagnosis in order to qualify for services or special consideration. But I have found that knowing my ASD status has brought me a lot of peace and greater self-appreciation. May it be so for you.
